Huge scaffolding for Heidecksburg Castle: historical renovation begins!

From the beginning of October 2025, things will get challenging at Heidecksburg Castle in Rudolstadt: the west wing of the historic building will be scaffolded so that the urgently needed roof renovation can begin, which is scheduled for 2026. Birgit Fischer, director of the Thuringian Castles and Gardens Foundation, announced the plans on Monday, emphasizing that the work is necessary to renovate the historic roof structure and stop the water ingress that has already caused damage. The size of the scaffolding will be considerable, as it will be up to 70 meters high and construction will take around four months, reports daily news.

A lot will change for visitors during the renovation phase. The Rococo Hall in the west wing is expected to remain closed until the end of 2028. From March 2026, the roof will be opened in sections in order to carry out work on the roof structure. Moisture damage has also been found in the rooms below, which illustrates the urgency of the measures. Loud Thuringian castles The Thuringian State Museum Heidecksburg and other attractive rooms will remain accessible to visitors during construction work.

Extensive renovation work throughout the castle

The renovation of Heidecksburg Castle has a total volume of around 35 million euros. These funds will go towards the restoration of the west and north wings, the stables and the pillared halls. The work is scientifically supported by restorers and architects who must preserve the historical character of the castle while at the same time complying with modern requirements for fire protection and statics. Coolis reports on the extensive structural defects found on the roof and facade; The slate covering in particular is badly weathered.

The work is part of a larger plan to preserve Thuringia's historical heritage. A total of 200 million euros are available for 23 renovation projects as part of the Special Investment Program I, half of which is financed by the federal government and the state of Thuringia. In this context, Heidecksburg Castle receives particular attention as it was once the residence of the counts and princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.

The museum remains open

However, there is no need to worry for those interested in culture, as the museum will continue to be open during the construction work. The porcelain gallery, the rooms in the south wing and “Rococo en miniature” will remain accessible to visitors, as will the north wing until renovation work begins there. While the most important rooms in the west wing are closed, the foundation plans to make them virtually accessible in order to offer anyone interested the opportunity to experience cultural history even during the construction period.

In summary, Heidecksburg Castle is facing an exciting, albeit challenging time in which historical substance is preserved and at the same time brought up to modern standards. Those responsible must have a good hand in managing the complex processes and maintaining museum operations.
