Greens demand water cents: Thuringia against drought and water shortage!

A central issue that currently concerns the Thuringian population is the ongoing drought and the associated water problems. The Greens in the Free State are therefore calling for the introduction of a water cent to counteract the water shortage. State leader Luis Schäfer emphasizes that Thuringia is particularly hard hit by the climate crisis and criticizes the state government for its failure to date to take action against these pressing problems. As Messages Today reports, water withdrawal bans have already come into force in some districts, such as the Saale-Holzland district and Weimarer Land.

The Green Party's proposal includes a levy of eight cents per cubic meter of water for large consumers, primarily from industry and agriculture. “This is a step in the right direction,” said Schäfer, who also recalled that the CDU and SPD have also called for similar taxes in the past but have not implemented them. The water cents should not only be used to finance necessary measures, but also flow into water protection and a more sustainable water balance.

Not at the expense of private households

In order to clear up misunderstandings, Neumann, spokeswoman for BUND, also commented on the topic. She made it clear that the obligation to pay should not affect private households. This regulation is specifically intended for large consumers in order to distribute the costs according to the polluter pays principle. “It is about achieving a balanced distribution of costs,” she explained, while emphasizing the need to share the costs of protecting and conserving water resources with large consumers. As MDR also reports, there are also significant economic elements behind this project.

But the challenges are complex. A research project by the Federal Environment Agency, WADKlim, points out that water shortages in Germany are caused by various causes. Climatic conditions and increasing water withdrawal in agriculture play a crucial role. Umweltbundesamt highlights that water quality problems such as nitrate pollution and requests from mining also contribute to the problems.

Future-oriented solutions

In order to meet these challenges, the WADKlim project proposes various solutions and recommendations for action. These include, among other things, promoting sustainable water use and strengthening cooperation between user groups. The focus on efficient water use and the possible reuse of water, for example for irrigating green spaces, opens up new perspectives for equitable supply for everyone. A regular survey and analysis of water use is also of great importance in order to avoid future conflicts of use.

In summary, it can be seen that the handling of water resources in Thuringia is a hot topic. It remains to be seen how quickly and effectively the political initiatives to improve water supply will take effect. It is clear that time to act is urgent if we want to overcome the challenges of drought and climate change.
