On August 17, 2025, there were some sensational events in the region. In Schöngleina, a six-year-old boy was seriously injured while riding a quad bike on a dirt road. The little adventurer had sneaked onto the unregistered quad that belonged to his grandfather. While his grandfather was driving behind with a tractor, the boy got out of control, rolled over and ended up lying under the quad. Luckily, help came quickly: he was taken to the hospital by rescue helicopter. The police have launched an investigation against the grandfather because he did not have a driving license and violated the compulsory insurance law. This raises questions about safety and supervision that are important not only for such recreational activities. MDR reports that his past and responsibilities are fueling public debate.

Another topic that stirs people's minds is the situation of the Isserstedt volunteer fire department in Jena. This has been temporarily out of use for two years due to internal conflicts. Conflicts during operations and events have escalated the situation. While the Jena professional fire department ensures safety during the day, the Lützeroda volunteer fire department takes responsibility in the evening. The youth fire brigade is currently not active in order to avoid further conflicts. The hope is that the fire department can be active again soon after the internal investigations have been completed.

The only applicant for the mayor's office, Marco Müller, a 50-year-old alderman and local council member, would like to succeed Sven Mechthold, who is no longer running after twelve years in office. Around 2,300 residents are eligible to vote in this election, and it remains exciting: If no candidate receives half of the votes, a runoff election on August 31st could be necessary.

Festivals and celebrations in Thuringia

A special event is coming up in Bad Köstritz: The Dahlia Festival, which for the first time has a special kids area for little visitors, will be celebrated from September 5th to 7th. In the inner courtyard of the city administration, offers such as a bouncy castle, professional make-up and a children's flea market await young guests. The tenth anniversary of the memorial chapel is also being celebrated in Ronneburg. This coincides with an ecumenical celebratory service that focuses on the history of the chapel, which commemorates the consequences of uranium mining in the GDR. In Saalburg-Ebersdorf, the district office warned against swimming in the Bleiloch reservoir.
