The current situation of car thefts
This incident is part of a worrying trend: According to statistics from the General Association of German Insurers, the number of car thefts in Germany rose by almost 20% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Nationwide, 14,585 vehicles with comprehensive insurance were stolen, meaning economic damage of 310 million euros. Particular hotspots for theft are in large cities like Berlin, where a car disappears every two hours.
The numbers make it clear once again that car theft is a widespread problem that also requires sufficient preventative measures. Owners of vehicles that are particularly popular with thieves should be particularly vigilant and find out about suitable protective measures.
The police in Schmalkalden appeal to citizens to be vigilant and to report immediately if they see anything suspicious. The security of your own mobility should be the top priority.
