Freedom for Maja T.: Demo in Meiningen demands return to Germany
Meiningen, Deutschland - In Meiningen, between 30 and 40 people gathered on June 20, 2025 to demonstrate for the release of the activist Maja T. imprisoned in Hungary. The event was organized by various left -wing groups and started at 6 p.m. on the station forecourt. The participants, mostly younger people, were in solidarity and not only demanded the release of Maja T., but also their return to Germany.
"Maja is in isolation and expect no fair procedure in Hungary," said a spokesman for the organizers. The demonstration train led through various streets of the city: Lindenallee, Charlottenstraße, Leipziger Straße, Bernhardstraße and Georgstrasse, to the market. At several stations, including the Struppsche Villa, speeches were kept in which Maja T.'s current situation was explained. Her father, who took part in the demo, also commented on the desolate conditions of detention and the political dimension of the process.
hunger strike and judicial discussion
as reported] (https://www.dw.com/en/german-activist-maja-goes-on-hon-in-hungary/a-72821582), Maja T. has been a non-binary German activist, since June 2024 in a Budapest prison cell, where she lives in detail. Since June 5, 2025, she has been on hunger strike to point out the unsustainable conditions, including permanent video surveillance and wearing handcuffs outside of her cell. This happened after it was delivered from Germany to Hungary.
The arrest of Maja T. is in the context of a process that began on February 21, 2025. It is accused of violating several people in February 2023 as part of an extremely right march in Budapest. The Hungarian legal system could impose a prison sentence of up to 24 years, which would probably not be the case in German law. Maja T. rejected a specified comparison offer of 14 years in prison because she denounced the unjust conditions for marginalized groups in Hungary. The Federal Constitutional Court in Germany classified the delivery as illegal.
political climate in Hungary
The situation around Maja T. is part of a larger trend in Hungary, which is repeatedly criticized when it comes to the rights of LGBTQ+person. Laws have been introduced since 2021 that are specifically directed against the LGBTQ+community, and according to a recently decided law, the government can ban pride events. These developments represent a deep cut in the long-sought equality in Europe, as well as on [Yahoo Nachrichten] (https://de.yahoo.com/pride-monat-paraden-f%C3%BCr- Mehr-180212075.html).
The Pride month took part in protest actions in various European cities, such as Warsaw and Budapest, to demonstrate for the rights of the LGBTQ+community. In Budapest, the Pride parade took place for the 29th time and not only addressed homophobia, but also social and ecological crises.
The demonstration in Meiningen and the entire support that Maja T. receives from various political and social groups clearly shows the urgency for changing the legal situation and a return to fair procedures in Europe.
