New Three Rocks Trail in Zella-Mehlis: A hiking paradise awaits you!

A new hiking dream in the Thuringian Forest has become reality: the “Three Rocks Trail” in Zella-Mehlis was ceremoniously opened. In addition to Mayor Torsten Widder, numerous hiking enthusiasts also took part in the inauguration. The new themed hiking trail is 9.4 kilometers long and is the seventh attraction in the resort. Thanks go to the dedicated hiking trail manager Bernd Braband as well as partners such as the Oberhof Forestry Office, the Schmalkalden-Meiningen District Office and the wood artist Andreas Happ, who were involved in the implementation. The Zella-Mehlis mountain rescue service also received particular attention, as it demonstrated a climbing and rescue exercise on Heinrichsbacher Stein, a central point on the path, as part of the opening.

The Three Rocks Path begins at the Alte Straße sports field, an easily accessible parking lot. From there the path winds through various stations and offers both nature experiences and impressive views. The route leads over the Spikesrain to the “Hans Renner” ski jumping facility and continues to an approx. 1.5 kilometer long nature trail, which is ideal for discovering the local flora and fauna. The first charming rock formations can be reached after 2.5 kilometers and reward you with a wonderful view of the Zella-Mehliser valley basin, the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön.

The striking rock formations

Among the three striking rocks that give the path its name, the Heinrichsbacher Stein stands out with a height of 750 meters. It is a popular climbing area with difficulty levels ranging from three to nine and attracted many mountaineers before the Second World War. After another hike, hikers reach Kaltenbrunner Stein, which at 849 meters offers limited visibility but impresses with its mystical atmosphere. The highest point on the path, the Gebrennten Stein at 897 meters, surprises with a magnificent view in all directions, including a view of the Hohe Rhön.

If you want to take a breather, there is a carved bench along the way that invites you to linger. After enjoying the beautiful views, the path ends in the Veilchenbrunnen mountain hut, where hikers can relax with a refreshment before heading back to the starting point via the dam meadow.

Hiking in the Thuringian Forest

The Thuringian Forest not only impresses with this new hiking trail, but also offers a true paradise for nature and sports lovers. It is located in the heart of Germany and attracts holidaymakers from near and far who come to enjoy the beautiful nature while hiking, cycling or water hiking. In addition to the Rennsteig cycle path and the Suhl summit hiking trail, there are many exciting offers in the region such as the Drachenschlucht or the world-famous Saalfeld fairy grottoes. The options are so diverse that there is something for every taste and relaxation is not neglected.

Mayor Widder invites anyone interested to explore the new “Three Rocks Trail” and promises that hiking will allow you to quickly leave your stressful everyday life behind you. The path is the perfect place to experience nature and enjoy the breathtaking landscape of the Thuringian Forest.
