Suhl and Munich are fighting for the 2030 World Shooting Championships!
The Olympic Games are casting their shadows ahead! The German Rifle Association (DSB) under the leadership of Jörg Brokamp, who has been federal managing director for over 20 years, has big plans for the coming years. In an interview, Brokamp emphasized that the DSB would like to host the Shooting World Championship in 2030. Suhl and Munich are being considered as possible venues. Both cities have already hosted international competitions and are highly regarded by the ISSF. The decision on the World Cup location will be made by the DSB Executive Board at the end of 2026, depending on the ISSF General Assembly and the presidency of Luciano Rossi until 2030. It is important to take into account sporting and infrastructural aspects, including technical developments and the availability of accommodation and transport options, which are crucial for such a large event.
With Suhl, which has particular strengths in the shotgun and pistol sectors, and Munich, the largest federal base with a long rifle tradition, the conditions for a successful application are met. At the same time, the DSB is neutral on the question of whether Germany should apply for the Summer Olympics. This decision lies with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), while Suhl is part of the Hamburg Olympic concept. This concept stipulates that citizens of Hamburg will vote next year on whether the city supports the Olympic bid.
Hamburg's Olympic bid in focus
The Suhl shooting sports center on the Friedberg is listed as a possible location for the shooting sports disciplines within the “Hamburg+” concept. Particular attention is paid to sustainability and the creation of short routes to the venues, 82 percent of which should be within a radius of just seven kilometers. The cities of Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region are showing interest in Olympic bids for potential hosting years from 2036 to 2044. Hamburg plans to encourage citizens to take part in a vote on the Olympic bid, which will further strengthen citizen participation and bring local support to the fore. The idea of using existing sports facilities and building temporary facilities follows a similar concept to that pursued in Paris.
Shooting sports and the DSB
The Olympic Games, which have taken place every four years since 1896, are considered one of the most important sporting events in the world. For many athletes, including members of the DSB, taking part in the Olympic Games is the ultimate sporting goal. The DSB, which also supports the Paralympics, Deaflympics and other international competitions, is committed to meeting these high standards in preparation for the upcoming international championships.
In times of increasing popularity of shooting sports and potential major events, it remains to be seen how applications will develop. One thing is certain: the DSB not only has a good knack for organization and promotion, but also a future-oriented concept that could further advance both the shooting sport and the venues.
