Traffic chaos in Schmalkalden-Meininger district: construction sites and closures!
This week, drivers in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district can expect some traffic disruptions due to various construction sites and maintenance work. The A 71 is particularly affected because both the Rennsteig tunnel and the Alte Burg tunnel have to be closed for maintenance work. These closures come into effect on the following dates:
- 30.06.2025, 19:00 Uhr bis 01.07.2025, 06:00 Uhr
- 01.07.2025, 19:00 Uhr bis 02.07.2025, 06:00 Uhr
- 02.07.2025, 19:00 Uhr bis 03.07.2025, 06:00 Uhr
- 03.07.2025, 19:00 Uhr bis 04.07.2025, 06:00 Uhr
Another construction site that requires diversions is the L 1129 from Oberhof to Schmücke, where partial closures are necessary until August 30, 2025 due to tree felling work. The L 3247 between Oberhof and the Rondell east node is also affected from June 16th until the same date. Partial closures must also be expected here, as the work is necessary to ensure the safety and quality of the road infrastructure.
Events and their effects
The popular Rennsteig relay race will take place on June 21, 2025, which will also have an impact on traffic. Temporary closures and traffic disruptions are planned for this event. The following streets are affected:
- L 1024 Brotterode – Tabarz: 06:30 bis 13:00 Uhr
- L 1026 Schmalkalden – Friedrichroda: 06:30 bis 13:00 Uhr
- L 1028 Schnellbach – Tambach-Dietharz: 07:30 bis 12:30 Uhr
- L 1128 Oberschönau – Oberhof: 08:00 bis 13:30 Uhr
In addition, from June 23rd, 2025 there will be a full closure of the L 3019 from the “Stillhof” roundabout to Henneberg, which will last until June 25th, 2025. Road construction work is being carried out here.
Further closures and construction sites
Numerous construction sites are reported in the district. The K 84 in Schwallungen, especially in the Eisenacher Straße/Bahnhofstraße/Meininger Straße intersection, will be completely closed from June 30, 2025 to August 8, 2025 due to canal and road construction work. Detours will be signposted. The situation is similar with the K 2513 in Breitenbach, which will be completely closed due to an event on June 28, 2025 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Furthermore, some roads are affected due to fiber optic expansion, such as the K 2516 in Mittelschmalkalden, which will have traffic disruptions until June 27, 2025, and the K 2521 between Bettenhausen and Wohlmuthausen, which will be affected until August 15, 2025.
