Construction of a new industrial area in Sonneberg: opportunities and concerns!

In Sonneberg, where the signs of economic growth are currently increasing, several companies have already expressed interest in a new industrial area in the Nuremberg metropolitan region. This became known on August 12, 2025, when Mayor Heiko Voigt (CDU) and the South Thuringia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) officially presented the plan. “We need a sensible location for companies,” emphasizes Voigt, in order to prevent the migration of industries and create favorable economic conditions.

The location has been the subject of much discussion in recent years. There were initial considerations as early as the 1990s, but the project has only been part of the state development program since 2014. The good connection to the A73 and A9 motorways should make the area particularly attractive for companies. The IHK sees great potential, especially for regional companies that want to expand.

Ecological concerns and foresight

But the plan also finds critical voices. The left in the city council expresses concerns about the loss of valuable agricultural land. According to current figures, 10 million hectares of land worldwide are converted into settlement and traffic areas every year, with agricultural areas increasingly being sealed off. This data from the Umweltbundesamt illustrates how important it is to protect fertile soils, especially since over 90% of food is produced on soils.

Thomas Heine, city councilor from the Left, emphasizes that renovating existing brownfield sites would make more ecological sense, even if it could involve higher costs and challenges. However, Mayor Voigt defends the need for new commercial space in Sonneberg to maintain the region's competitiveness.

The economic perspective

The economic situation in Germany is a constant challenge compared to other countries. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has commissioned a comprehensive analysis to develop the Industrial Strategy 2030. The aim is to strengthen the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry in Germany and the EU. This development also aims to manage the effects of globalization, digitalization and climate protection measures.

The interests of companies and environmentalists are therefore in a tense relationship that requires clear communication and a good hand in decision-making. How the plan for the new industrial area will ultimately develop remains to be seen.
