Dialect evening in Mengersgereuth: Experience stories and music live!

High culture is very important in the Sonneberg district these days. The region attracts numerous visitors with a variety of events centered around the unique dialect, which is unparalleled in East Germany. An absolute highlight event took place on September 25, 2025 as part of the city and museum festival. Here the Mundart South Thuringia working group opened this cozy evening with a dialect reading under the title “Heiteres & Thoughtful – Stories & Poems”.

Chief organizer Renate Röther took over the management and moderation, who thrilled the audience with readings and singing by talented actors such as Josephine Söllner, Regina Metzler, Margit Schiffner and Wolfgang Brand. The city of Sonneberg is known for its lively cultural scene, and so many visitors came to enjoy the warm sounds of the dialect. To quench the thirst of the thirsty guests, there were refreshing drinks and Franconian wines from 6 p.m., offered by the support association.

The driving force of the dialect

Dialect theater has a long tradition in this region. Loud UNESCO The comedy genre, which is based on myths, legends and historical ideas, predominates in dialect theater. This form of theater unites people and strengthens popular culture in rural areas. It not only promotes regional identity, but also the cultivation of customs and dialect.

Dialect theater also offers a social relief function and creates a connection between the participants and the local population. Renate Röther and her team are committed to strengthening locally rooted theater and, through their commitment, enable a real feeling of home for everyone involved.

Autumn reading in the “Matthes” inn

Another highlight will take place on October 18th, when the Mundart working group presents an autumn reading in the “Matthes” inn, also known as “De Mühlkarl”. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and promises new stories and poems that will keep the audience entertained. If you prefer to go over the top with culinary delights, you shouldn't miss the fact that your physical well-being will be taken care of from 5:30 p.m. Seat and meal reservations are possible by calling (03675) 706019.

The interest in these events shows that the region's dialect and stories are very popular. There will be another reading on October 11th at the “Zum Goldenen Anker” inn in Steinach, which is already fully booked.

Shared experiences at the city and museum festival

The exciting late summer and autumn in Sonneberg also brings a number of creative offerings. On Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. there are creative workshops, regional delicacies and market stalls that attract numerous visitors. These workshops include woodworking and art work, knitting and crocheting, as well as individual souvenirs offered by local artisans such as Gustav and Renate Luthardt, as well as many others. Craft activities for children are also on the program, not forgetting the popular bouncy castles and entertainment for the little ones.

Loud Sonneberg Toy Museum The organizers are already looking forward to the lovingly designed stands that present the diversity of the region. A children's street flea market and the children's show “Magic for young and old” round off the festive offering. On Sunday the generations can meet and there will also be laser rifle exercises on the site.

Sonneberg has proven itself to be a lively cultural city that maintains customs and dialect, and it is clear: the dialect is lived here and shared with joy.
