Sonneberg pedals: City cycling starts in September!

There is reason to be happy in Sonneberg: the city is taking part in the nationwide “City Cycling” campaign for the first time. This was announced by the city administration and registration starts for all enthusiastic cyclists at the beginning of July. From September 1st to 21st, 2025, citizens have the opportunity to collect their kilometers - be it alone or in groups. Everyone who lives, works or goes to school in Sonneberg is warmly invited to take part. To register, go directly here.

What is particularly exciting is that the impulse to participate came from the schools in Sonneberg. They are also involved in the special “School Cycling” competition, in which the “most cycling-active schools” in each federal state are awarded prizes. In addition, it is emphasized that all cycle paths covered count, including the popular weekend tours. The kilometers can be easily entered via the Stadtradeln internet portal. Group sizes are unlimited - cycling together is twice as much fun!

Expanded bike paths and the Iron Curtain Trail

But that's not all that's keeping Sonneberg in turmoil these days. The city has been connected to the D route network via the Iron Curtain Trail since the end of June. This impressive route is part of EuroVelo 13 and follows the former border between the Warsaw Pact countries and western countries. The German section of the Iron Curtain Trail stretches for more than 1,800 kilometers! It is particularly worth mentioning that the route leads through Sonneberg and also offers detours to the city center and to the Kalte Küche nature park and geopark information center in Spechtsbrunn.

The Iron Curtain Gravel Trail runs over 687 kilometers in central Germany and is ideal for gravel bikepacking tours. The route is perfect for an active holiday of 8 to 14 days, although this is made easier in Thuringia as bicycles can be transported there free of charge on public transport. There are a variety of scenic highlights to discover, from remains of border fortifications to interesting museums.

MINT day and other activities

Another interesting event in Sonneberg is the MINT day in the city park, which takes place on August 27th. Under the main theme “Bicycle”, the upcoming city cycling is highlighted. There will also be a coding campaign for bicycle owners on this day - a good opportunity to secure your own bike.

In summary, the summer of 2025 in Sonneberg promises to be a truly active cycling experience. Get ready to pedal and be part of these exciting events and initiatives!
