Forest fire in Thuringia: Armed forces fight against blazing flames!

On July 4, 2025, the fire brigades in Thuringia will continue to be under great demand, as the forest fire on the Saalfelder Höhe has been keeping the emergency services on tenterhooks for four days now. Carolin Schreiber from the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district office describes the situation as “remaining tense”. Despite intensive extinguishing measures, the fire was prevented from spreading further on Friday night.

Around 560 firefighters from all over Thuringia, supported by three fire engines from Franconia, are currently on duty. Thanks to the announced reinforcements from Bavaria, which are expected on Friday afternoon, support will be maintained until Sunday. District road 184 between Reichmannsdorf and Großneundorf is currently completely closed. For the highly mobile emergency services, this means, among other things, that local public transport is canceled due to the situation.

Disaster alarm and emergency services

The heavy smoke development makes the situation not only dangerous but also challenging.

The fire brigade is on duty with water cannons from the state police and helicopters, including those from the federal police. Volunteer firefighters from Sonneberg, with the support of emergency services from Frankenblick, Ernstthal, and Oberlind, are securing their own section. The embers in the forest floor remain a major challenge for the emergency services. District Administrator Robert Sesselmann expresses his respect and thanks to the volunteers and is planning a thank you party for everyone who does their part to extinguish the fire.

External influences and the risk of forest fires

The current forest fires in Germany are not only a challenge for firefighters, but also show the alarming trends of climate change. Loud Statista Forest fires are increasingly a huge problem, particularly due to long dry periods and high temperatures, which have contributed to a more numerous and intense fire risk in recent years.

While Germany has been repeatedly affected by forest fires in recent years, statistics show that the highest losses were recorded in 2022 with over 3,000 hectares. For comparison: in 2023 there were over 1,200 hectares. The cause of fires is often arson or negligence, but in only a few cases are they of natural origin. Such fires not only have a devastating impact on the environment, but also cause financial damage that has a major impact on our quality of life.

The fire brigade and the emergency services involved in the forest fires on the Saalfelder Höhe are therefore faced with a double challenge: fighting the fire and the ongoing weather conditions, which repeatedly escalate the situation. Great respect is due to everyone who is on duty and doing their best to bring the fire under control.
