Second round for volunteer judges: Apply now!

There is currently a lot of movement in the area of volunteer judges in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district. As insuedthueringen.de reports, the district council screened out too many applicants for the honorary judgeship in June. District spokesman Michael Volk confirmed on Monday that there will now be a second round in this process. This means that the place in the ranks of voluntary jurisprudence remains exciting in the long term.

The district administration plans to send out a new call for applications for election as honorary judge at the Meiningen Administrative Court at the end of the month. What is particularly interesting is the fact that the term of office of the newly elected judges will end on November 10, 2025. By this point, 39 citizens from the district should be nominated for this important role, which already caused a stir during the previous selection. This shows that a good hand is required when making the selection.

The path to becoming a volunteer judge

The decision on the list of proposals is made by the district council, while the election committee of the Meiningen Administrative Court will select 70 volunteer judges from a total of 140 proposals in the fall. The responsibility that this office entails should not be underestimated: volunteer judges have the same rights as professional judges in oral hearings and judgments. However, if you are interested, you should decide quickly.

Interested citizens must submit their applications to the Schmalkalden-Meiningen District Office by May 2, 2025 at the latest. Who can apply? The prerequisite is German citizenship, a minimum age of 25 years and a place of residence in the judicial district. Reasons for exclusion include the loss of the ability to hold public office or a conviction of more than six months in prison for intentional acts.

Application details

Applications must contain certain information: last name, first name, place of birth, date of birth, profession and address. Not only individual applications can be submitted; Parliamentary groups, political parties and social institutions are also allowed to make suggestions. This ensures that a broad and fair selection of candidates is available.

Special features regarding the reasons for exclusion include, among other things, violations of humanity or the rule of law as well as previous activities in the GDR state security service. According to lra-sm.de, members of the Bundestag, state governments and civil servants are also excluded from office.

The proceedings show how important it is to ensure diversity and fairness in the judiciary. The interest in volunteer judgeship reflects not only the commitment of citizens, but also the trust in the ongoing processes.

In summary, we are looking forward to the second call for applications. Anyone interested in the dedicated activity can still find information in the official gazettes and at the contact points, which is also available at erfurt.de.
