81-year-old causes accident: driving for seniors is becoming increasingly risky!

A traffic accident caused a stir in Suhl on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred in the intersection of Hubertusstrasse and Schützenstrasse. An 81-year-old driver ignored the right of way of a 30-year-old car driver, which led to a violent collision between the two vehicles. Fortunately, the senior only suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for further examination. Both cars were no longer able to move after the accident, and the total damage is estimated at around 5,000 euros, according to the Suhl State Police Inspectorate reported.

Such incidents are not entirely rare. According to reports from the Federal Statistical Office, older drivers are often the main culprit in traffic accidents. In fact, the proportion of people over 65 who were registered as the main culprits in accidents resulting in personal injury was an alarming 68.7 percent in 2022. For those over 75, this figure is as high as 76.6 percent, making them the riskiest age group in traffic. This also seems to have played a role in the current accident in Suhl.

Traffic behavior of older drivers

Older people often make specific mistakes in traffic, such as ignoring the right of way or making inaccurate turns and turns. The daily news highlights that many seniors are less likely to be active in road traffic, which paradoxically leads to lower levels of accident involvement. However, when involved, they are often the main cause of their accidents.

Another interesting statistic shows that people under 65 only account for 55.2 percent of those who cause accidents. Young drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 are primarily responsible for accidents in 70.8 percent of cases. These differences in traffic behavior could be due to different experiences and driving habits.

Required actions and suggestions

In view of such worrying figures, the EU Commission is discussing whether it should be necessary to introduce regular self-assessments or medical examinations of fitness to drive from the age of 70. However, Transport Minister Volker Wissing has spoken out against such measures and sees them as unnecessary bureaucracy.

Overall, road traffic remains a challenge for all age groups. Statistics show that people aged 65 and over are less likely to be involved in accidents, but when they are, they are significantly more likely to be injured. In 2022, 52,748 elderly people were involved in road accidents, with 12,350 sustaining serious injuries while 1,023 tragically died, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office emerges.
