Police warn: Over 3,000 euros stolen through bank card fraud!

The security situation in Germany and Austria is currently characterized by a worrying increase in criminal activity. The misuse of bank cards and telephone fraud are particularly in the public eye.

On November 8, 2024, a car was broken into in Suhl and the perpetrators stole a wallet containing cash and bank cards. The following day, November 9th, 2024, a previously unknown man withdrew 500 euros using the stolen cards at 1:00 a.m. in Frankfurt am Main. This information was provided by insuedthueringen.de published. Another suspect committed a similar incident in Suhl on January 8, 2025 and withdrew a total of 2,700 euros, which led to an intensive search by the police.

The police are now urgently looking for witnesses who can provide information about the perpetrators. Surveillance camera images have been published and the public is called upon to provide information to help clear up the crimes by calling 03681 369-0.

Telephone fraud in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district

Another worrying incident recently occurred in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, where a 68-year-old was contacted several times by fraudsters posing as employees of his bank. How presseportal.de reported that he was given false information about alleged unauthorized debits that he was supposed to reverse. The man fell for the fraudulent calls and passed on his TAN codes in a total of three telephone conversations. This resulted in his account being lightened by around 110,000 euros.

The police strongly warn against passing on personal codes to unknown people and recommend hanging up immediately if you receive suspicious calls and checking your own account. At this point, healthy skepticism is required! The safety of citizens comes first.

The situation in retail

However, the challenges posed by crime are not just limited to private households. A recently published one Safety study, published by the trade association, BMI and crime prevention, highlights alarming trends in retail. 86% of Austrian dealers have already had experience with crime, and 42% of them have been affected several times. The annual damage caused by shoplifting alone amounts to over 500 million euros.

The focus is particularly on cybercrime and innovative forms of fraud that accompany increasing digitalization. A large number of online shops are hit by cyberattacks, which further exacerbates the security situation. 64% of online retailers report being affected by cybercrime, which illustrates how important effective protective measures have become.

Given these developments, it is crucial for all citizens and merchants to remain vigilant and not share personal information carelessly. Only together can we stop the criminals!
