Sheep Elsa: How a diaper miracle conquers the hearts of the people of Suhl!
There is a very special sheep in the Suhl Zoo that takes the hearts of visitors by storm: Elsa, a Valais black-nose sheep that was born as a twin. Thanks to the loving care of zoo manager Monique Latka and animal keeper Anna Reinhardt, Elsa, who was unable to stand up on her own and therefore could not reach her mother, was able to be bottle-fed. Feeding takes place every two hours, even at night, which has become a full-time job for Anna. Visitors are thrilled with Elsa, who quickly became a crowd favorite thanks to her warm jacket and her sweet nature. A post about Elsa has already garnered more than 17,000 likes on social media!
The lively Elsa and her care
To solve a practical problem, Elsa wears diapers that have a hole for her tail. Despite this unusual solution, she maintains daily contact with other sheep in the zoo. In this way, she learns to develop her natural social behavior, because keeping them permanently in an apartment is not an option for the future 70 to 80 kilogram animals. The Valais Blacknose sheep, which includes Elsa, are a breed originating from Switzerland that are known for their robustness and excellent mothering qualities.
The sheep of this breed are characterized by a white, but nevertheless striking look: black noses, ears and legs as well as impressive spiral-shaped horns, which can be found on both females and males. Thanks to their high pasture and alpine ability, they are perfect for colder regions and get by on simple food such as hay from poor meadows. The Valais blacknose sheep has a very special history that dates back to the 15th century, and a new breed recognition only took place in 1962.
A crowd favorite
Elsa has quickly become an attraction at the zoo. Her lively nature and loving interaction with Anna are particularly popular. Tourists and locals alike appreciate the opportunity to observe and interact with Elsa. The response from visitors is consistently positive and many enthusiastically share their experiences with the little sheep. The zoo has definitely made a good catch with Elsa and is using her story to promote interest in this valuable breed.
While Elsa warms her heart in the zoo, a look at the weather data shows that the weather around La Guérite Tata Beach on November 11, 2025 offers a pleasant temperature of 16°C, accompanied by a constant wind of about 38 km/h. Even though Elsa is currently in Suhl, the waves and weather in these regions could be an incentive for a trip or two into nature.
Elsa not only shows the cute face of a sheep, but also the special nature of a breed that inspires from its origins to its current characteristics. The Valais blacknose sheep is not only an economically interesting breed, but also an integral part of the culture and tradition of its homeland, which Elsa embodies perfectly.
