Vesser celebrates 1,125 years: an insider tip for hiking enthusiasts!

Vesser, the smallest district of the city of Suhl, will proudly celebrate its 1,125th anniversary in 2025. In a quiet valley surrounded by forested mountains, this place has become a popular travel destination for nature and hiking enthusiasts. Almost 100 years ago, the chronicler August Trinius described Vesser as an “idyllic” – a name that couldn’t be better suited to this charming place. Tourism plays an important role here, especially since the rise of summer visitors who have discovered the Vessertal as a resort. As insuedthueringen.de reports, the area is also highlighted by the publications of Gerhard Rempt and Brigitte Rost, who talk about the beauty of the region in their book “Perle in Thuringia” wrote, becoming increasingly well known.

The picturesque surroundings of Vesser attract hikers, who are often accompanied by the babbling of the Vesser stream that flows to Breitenbach. Historically, the creek's water powered various mills, including iron mill, tooth hammer, and cutting mill, which contributed to the region's economic development. Today, visitors not only find the beautiful nature, but also a wide range of leisure activities.

Be active in nature

No matter whether you are a beginner or an experienced athlete – there is something for everyone in Vesser. The Nordic Walking group, which has been meeting every Thursday in the Vesserer “Offenstall” for several years, has between 8 and 15 participants who are between the late 20s and early 60s. Led by Nordic fitness instructor Petra Kühn, everyone is always in a good mood and moving. Anyone interested can register for the 1.5 to 2 hour activity. A ten-ticket for non-members of the Vesser sports club costs 59 euros and also includes the rental fee for the sticks, as can be found on vesser.de.

The Vessertal also offers a number of other sports opportunities. At the DSV nordic Aktiv Center Schmiedefeld a.R./Suhl, visitors can expect a multifunctional sports field that can be used for tennis, basketball and volleyball. There is also the option of bringing a football team to idyllic Vesser, ideal for clubs planning a sporting holiday.

A place of relaxation

Vesser has established itself as a state-recognized resort, and with around 250 residents, the town offers comfortable and inexpensive accommodation in guesthouses and holiday apartments. Winter sports are not neglected, especially in the Vessertal: one of the largest natural jumps in Germany can be found here, as well as a cross-country ski trail and numerous ski hiking trails for beginners and advanced skiers. Winter sports fans enjoy torchlight hikes, night tobogganing and traditional events such as the ski carnival.

For hiking enthusiasts, there are guided hikes through the Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve from May to October. The area is home to not only numerous hiking trails and nature trails, but also unique plant and animal species, including rare species. The area around Vesser, for example, invites you to take tours to the many sights, such as the hunting weapons museum in Suhl and the Goethe memorials near Ilmenau.

Vesser is a place that impresses with its history, the beauty of nature and the hospitality of the people. A visit here promises not only relaxation, but also unforgettable experiences in the picturesque Thuringian landscape.
