Animal drama in Thuringia: Deceased dogs discovered on the farm!
In Thuringia, a terrifying case of cruelty to animals causes great horror. Current reports include disturbing photos of dead dogs that are starved and covered with dust. These cruel images come from a courtyard in the Zossen district of Wünschendorf, where the police and public prosecutors are now investigating the Animal Welfare Act for alleged violations. It is frightening that the carcasses were stored on a site on which only zebus and cats were kept according to the approval.
The fact that official checks are always limited to stable buildings and outdoor areas. The illegal dog keeping, which only came to light after the death of the court operator at the end of last year, apparently remained undetected. Animal rights activists have already announced that they have been found in the case, and similar grievances have also been found on another farm near Gera. Both courtyards belong to the association "Gnadenhof for Animals Gera".
The role of the authorities
The knowledge gives a bright light on the efficiency of the reviews by the veterinary office. Last year the Zebu posture was discontinued due to some abnormalities, but nobody seemed to have complained about the dog postures until the grievances escalated. An investigation was initiated and the files were handed over to the police. Here you can see that animal welfare is often a challenge in practice.
The Thuringian Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Health, Women and Family has been dealing with animal welfare issues since 1993 and is advised by the Thuringian Advisory Board for Animal Welfare. This advisory board consists of volunteers who recruit themselves from various institutions, including the State Animal Protection Association and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Current topics and problems in animal welfare are dealt with in regular sessions. Nevertheless, the present case shows that many recommendations and discussions get stuck in theory.
Animal Welfare Act and suggestions for improvement
The Animal Welfare Act, which was issued with the aim of protecting animals from avoidable pain and suffering, does not seem to work consistently. The determination that animals are not things, but sensitive co -creatures, makes the situation all the more desperate. On the one hand, most of the provisions on vertebrates, such as dogs and cats, are focused, and on the other hand, there are deficits in the law itself that can lead to different interpretations. This goes so far that animal rights activists are not even allowed to sue in court on behalf of the animals.
The demand for an association law that would enable animal welfare associations to take judicial steps in the name of the animals is becoming increasingly important in this context. Animal welfare violations are repeatedly reported, but rarely seem to be seriously persecuted. The case of Wünschendorfer Hof is only the tip of the iceberg, where the problems in the Animal Welfare Act come to light. What is urgently needed are more consistent controls and a strong sign for the protection of animals.
The investigation into the incidents on the said courtyards continue, and the public looks forward to the consequences of this tragic situation. A reform of the Animal Welfare Act could be an important step in the right direction-for more transparency and above all for the animals themselves.
