Cellar thieves strike in Bad Salzungen – witnesses urgently needed!
Several break-ins have been reported in Bad Salzungen in the last few days, worrying residents. According to the Suhl State Police Inspectorate, a cellar break-in occurred on Otto-Grotewohl-Straße between October 23rd at 4:00 p.m. and October 24th at 6:00 p.m. An unknown perpetrator broke the padlock on the cellar door and stole valuable tools worth a total of 1,500 euros. Items stolen include a chop saw, a jigsaw, an electric planer and a gasoline generator. The Bad Salzungen police are therefore asking for your help and calling on anyone with relevant information to call 03695/5510 to clear up this case.
But that's not all: just a few hours later, on October 24th at 10:49 a.m., another break-in was reported in the basement of an apartment building on Albert-Schweitzer-Straße. The perpetrator stole two bicycle saddles and a front wheel of a bicycle, with property damage estimated at around 120 euros. Here too, information from the public is required. The Bad Salzungen police station asks witnesses to call 03695 551-0.
Burglaries on the rise
These incidents are part of a larger trend in Germany, where the number of home break-ins is increasing again. According to Statista, around 119,000 thefts in or out of apartments were recorded in Germany in 2023, of which around 77,800 were classified as residential burglaries, which means violent entry into the living space. This is the highest level since 2019 and shows an increase in burglaries for the second year in a row. The risk of burglaries is particularly increased in urban federal states such as Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg, while Bavaria has a comparatively low burglary rate.
The clearance rate for residential burglaries was only 14.9% in 2023. This means that only a small proportion of cases were actually solved. The police identified 9,890 suspects in this area, with the proportion of foreign suspects being 42.9%. In Thuringia, to which Bad Salzungen belongs, the proportion of foreigners is comparatively low at 15.4%.
The effects of burglaries are not just material. In addition to the economic damage, many of those affected also suffer from a loss of sense of security and possibly even psychological consequences. The increase in burglaries in Bad Salzungen and elsewhere is leaving many people unsettled.
Given these worrying developments, it is even more important to be vigilant and to inform the police immediately if you suspect anything. Stay safe and protect your home!
