Renovation in Thal: Complete closure from October 6th hits commuters hard!

The thorough renovation of the through town in Thal (L2119) will begin on Monday, October 6, 2025. This was announced by the Thuringian State Office for Building and Transport. The measures include a temporary full closure of the road, which will have a significant impact on traffic in the region. As MDR reports, the first construction phase will last until December 12, 2025.

The entire construction period is scheduled to last around a year and consists of several phases. In order to keep the disruption to residents and road users as low as possible, the originally planned full closure was changed after intensive discussions. The road work starts with a complete closure between the DRK intersection and the Thalberg/Kittelsthal entrance.

Planned construction process

  • 6. Oktober bis 12. Dezember 2025: Vollsperrung (Kreuzung DRK bis Einfahrt Thalberg/Kittelsthal)
  • 13. Dezember 2025 bis 17. März 2026: Winterpause
  • 18. März bis 10. Mai 2026: halbseitige Sperrung mit Ampelverkehr (Einfahrt Thalberg bis Firma REV)
  • 20. Mai bis 28. Juni 2026: halbseitige Sperrung mit Ampelverkehr (Firma REV bis Schreiberbrunnen)
  • 6. Juli bis 14. August 2026: Vollsperrung in den Sommerferien (Schreiberbrunnen bis Ortsausgang Thal Richtung Ruhla)

During the tense construction phases, a large-scale diversion will be set up, which will be guided by appropriate signage on the motorway. Commuters from Bad Salzungen and Bad Liebenstein are particularly affected, as they can no longer reach the A4 via Thal during the closures. Alternatives lead via the Inselsberg or Eisenach. However, these diversions could also be made more difficult by an additional construction site in Winterstein, as Eisenach.life specifies.

Impact on local traffic

According to Mayor Stefan Hartung, the summer closure will place a great burden on the population in the Erbstromtal. However, during the construction work it is ensured that rescue traffic remains possible without restrictions. In addition, public transport providers are integrated into the planning process in order to communicate necessary adjustments in a timely manner. Information about the progress of the work will be made available via city channels and social media in order to keep citizens fully informed.

The renovation project in Thal is just one of many that will be implemented in Thuringia in 2025. There are numerous construction sites across the region that will put drivers' patience to the test. These findings come from a report by Die Thüringer, which addresses the challenges of transport infrastructure.

Preparations for construction work in Thal began in autumn 2024. The cooperation between the city, the state office and the planners aims to keep the inconvenience for residents as low as possible during these extensive measures.
