Summer holidays in Thuringia: relaxing offers for children and families!

The summer holidays have begun in Thuringia and the joy of the upcoming free time is on a high wave. Ulrike Grosse-Röthig, the education policy spokeswoman for the Die Linke parliamentary group in the Thuringian state parliament, would like to thank the teachers for their tireless efforts and wishes both teachers and students a relaxing few days. “I hope that our school community will start the new school year with fresh energy in the fall,” said Grosse-Röthig. At the same time, she notes that the demand for holiday leisure activities in the larger cities in Thuringia significantly exceeds the available options. She would like to thank the many committed people who set up sporting, cultural and creative programs for children and young people. “These programs are particularly valuable, including for lower-income families,” she adds.

The nationwide youth helpline (0800 – 008 008 0), which can be used free of charge, offers an always open ear for children and young people who have worries or problems during this time. Despite the large number of offers, there is currently no comprehensive overview of the holiday leisure options throughout Thuringia, which makes planning difficult for families.

Real adventure for the youngest

The German Family Association e.V. presents a proven concept for the summer holidays: holiday camps that have been offered since 1992. These camps are open not only to children from Thuringia, but also to young people beyond. The participants immerse themselves in a cell phone-free zone, where there is not only fun and joy, but also new friendships are made. “We want the children to discover nature, gain new experiences and recover from the stress of school,” explains a spokesman for the association. The dedicated group leaders ensure that the children are well looked after and experience a varied program.

During the holidays, families can also take advantage of the leisure activities available. In order to meet different needs, the German Family Association offers advice on choosing the right holiday trip.

Active during the summer holidays

There are numerous holiday offers in Thuringia for students who do not want to travel. An exciting option are the cycling courses, which are organized by the state traffic police in cooperation with schools. These courses, which are particularly aimed at primary school students, are intended to make up for deficits from the Corona year. In a playful way, the children learn how to behave safely in traffic and train important skills such as movement coordination and dexterity. Course lengths vary, and there are even practices for older children.

The Zoopark in Erfurt also offers the opportunity to ice skate with its new ice rink, which has been causing a stir since last week. The ice surface is made of recycled plastic and does not require any cooling units. Ice skates can be rented for four euros - a great opportunity to get some exercise in the fresh air.

Similar activities also take place in other cities. In Gera, Mayor Julian Vonarb is linking a postcard campaign to the summer holidays, which is intended to encourage children to let their creativity run wild. Postcards can be sent to the town hall until September 5th with the chance to win great prizes, including a look behind the scenes at the Gera Zoo and free entry to visit the zoo.

Last but not least, the Thuringian Ministry of Education is active and supports schools with summer holiday courses under the motto “First row #teachersinthueringen”. Various offers can be set up via a platform - from football taster courses to other activities. For price-conscious families, there is the student holiday ticket, which allows unlimited bus and train travel throughout Thuringia for less than 30 euros.

All little adventurers and sporty spirits are catered for, while the teachers can look forward to their well-deserved break!
