Complete closure and library closure: Eisenach suffers from construction sites!
A lot is happening in Eisenach: From Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the K 98, also known as “Alte Salzunger Straße”, will be completely closed for renovation. These measures are planned until Friday, August 8, 2025. The reason for the full closure is extensive road renovation work, which has proven necessary to improve the condition of the road. A diversion will be set up for trucks via the B 62, Barchfeld, L 1023, Möhra, Oberrohn and Steinbruch and back. Cars, on the other hand, can use the route from Grundecke Bad Salzungen to Gräfen-Nitzendorf and vice versa.
The report of the road closure is not the only news from the region. In addition, the Eisenach City Library will remain closed from Monday, July 21st. The reason for this is an accident that severely affected the functionality of the electrical and IT systems. It is hoped that the library can be reopened to readers soon.
Traffic warnings and diversions
At the construction site on Kasseler Straße, which also has an impact on traffic, the old bridge over the Mühlgraben will be replaced by a new building. Construction work began at the beginning of June and is expected to take some time. Detours lead from the Rennbahn and Kasseler Straße via Herrenmühlenstraße.
Heavy truck traffic will be excluded from the diversion route, which has angered some residents as they observe that many truck drivers do not respect these routes. However, there is an exception for delivery traffic that is allowed to travel via Herrenmühlenstrasse. Road signs have also been erected to indicate the new regulations and a yellow broken line will be placed on the roadway to guide drivers.
Assessments of the traffic situation
Herrenmühlenstrasse has become significantly more important as a result of the diversion. In order to improve the safety situation, speed checks are planned on the diversion route and the police will work closely together. Permission has already been obtained for the use of a municipal speed camera to check compliance with speed regulations.
Unfortunately, there are also delays in the construction work. These were caused by the need to relocate utilities prior to demolition of the old bridge. Responsibility for the construction site lies with the State Office for Building and Transport, as Kasseler Straße is a federal highway. However, the construction company is doing its best to make up for the delay. A request has currently been made for Kasseler Straße to be completely closed until December 19th.
