EU states demand an immediate stop to military operations in Gaza!

Amid the tense situation in the Gaza Strip, Germany, France and Poland are calling on the Israeli government to immediately stop military actions in Gaza City. In a joint statement following talks in Warsaw, Foreign Ministers Johann Wadephul, Jean-Noel Barrot and Radosław Sikorski highlighted the need for a ceasefire to enable the release of hostages and secure urgently needed humanitarian aid for the Palestinians. How Middle East Monitor reported, the mass expulsions of civilians and the extensive destruction in the region are the main reasons for these demands.

In their statement, the ministers stressed the need to respect international humanitarian laws and called for the unconditional release of all hostages. Unhindered access for humanitarian aid, in coordination with the United Nations and relevant organizations, is also a high priority. They condemned ongoing settlement activity, including the controversial E1 project, which is seen as a threat to the possibility of a contiguous Palestinian state.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza

The situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic. According to information from ZDF Aid organizations such as UNICEF have identified a famine, the first in the Middle East. Around two million people, including around a million children, are dependent on humanitarian aid. Distributing aid is extremely challenging as most civilians live in extreme conditions.

Christian Schneider, Managing Director of UNICEF Germany, explained the strategic division of relief supplies into vital areas, which include food, hygiene products and support for children. Despite efforts, aid deliveries are insufficient to cover the entire population. Regular looting complicates the process, even if this usually occurs out of acute emergency.

International reactions and peace efforts

UN Secretary-General António Guterres also made a clear statement. In his report to the Security Council, he condemned the attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian groups that began on October 7, 2023. He called for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages and criticized Israeli airstrikes that have led to tens of thousands of deaths in Gaza, many of them women and children. According to Guterres, the humanitarian situation is worse than ever, with virtually the entire population affected by displacement.

Additionally, Guterres stressed the importance of a temporary ceasefire to enable humanitarian assistance and pave the way for peace negotiations. The international community is monitoring with concern the violence in the region, which is not only limited to Gaza but has also spread to the occupied West Bank and Lebanon. This highlights the urgency of a political solution, as called for in the New York Declaration.

Overall, the situation in and around Gaza remains extremely tense. The international community is called upon to take action and put pressure on relevant actors. Developments will continue to be closely monitored and a prudent approach is needed to address this crisis.
