Cultural highlight: Weimar celebrates Goethe's birthday with a big party!
Things are going well again in Weimar! The Weimar Classic Foundation has put together an exciting program that will not only delight culture lovers. The focus is particularly on the new concert series “Piano Professionals”, which starts on August 26, 2025 in the traditional Liszt House. This series of events promotes young, aspiring pianists and offers them the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in solo recitals.
Kicking things off today is the award-winning Emir Ilgen, who will enchant the audience with his impressive musicality. This will be followed on September 2nd by the talented Mikhail Kambarov, who will study under the guidance of the renowned professor Mikhail Lifits. Admission to the concerts is a fair 8 euros (reduced 6 euros), and tickets are easily available at the box office. This makes culture twice as much fun.
Celebrate Goethe's birthday
Another highlight of this year's program is the celebration of Goethe's 276th birthday. On August 28th there will be a lot of hustle and bustle surrounding this special event. “DIE KULTURTECHNIKER” will present their event “Faustus’ Loops & Words” at 1 p.m. Afterwards, an anniversary volume with great Goethe cult cartoons will be presented at 5 p.m. in the Goethe National Museum.
The whole family is also catered for: from 12 p.m., visitors can expect free access to an extensive family program. The transcultural ensemble Risha can also be heard on the same day at 5 p.m., and the artist Deslin Ami Kaba will bring her concert to the stage at 7 p.m.
Panel discussions and scientific insights
There will also be an exciting panel discussion with Nora Gommringer and Till Wiebel on August 28th, moderated by Carsten Tesch. Admission here is also free. The music continues soon afterwards with the duo Kaiser Friedl and Li-chin Li on August 29th, who will perform at 7 p.m. in the Bauhaus Museum Weimar.
But the event program is far from over. On September 3rd there will be a lecture on provenance research, and on September 4th there will be two interesting events on the program: an online event on artificial intelligence in cultural institutions and a lecture on Rembrandt's drawing art. The “AI and Source” specialist day on September 5th will be part of this multitude of offerings, followed by the Genius Loci Festival, which will provide insights into light art and performances from September 5th to 7th.
The importance of the Weimar Classic Foundation
The Klassik Stiftung Weimar is one of the most important cultural institutions in Germany and includes no fewer than 25 museums, castles and historic houses. The highlights include the Duchess Anna Amalia Library and the Goethe and Schiller Archive, the oldest literary archive in the country. In addition, eleven of the facilities have the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer space for exciting discussions about cultural topics that still have an impact today.
For those interested, the research platform of the Goethe and Schiller Archive also offers access to numerous biographical data about Goethe's life and work as well as an extensive portfolio of historical-critical writings and letters by and to Goethe, which look back on a long tradition of literary research.
With an authentic and wide range of cultural offerings, Weimar regularly attracts visitors from near and far and ultimately gives the meaning of classical art a modern twist. Remember to mark the dates in your calendar because there is something for everyone here!
