Storm disaster in Thuringia: Family urgently needs help!

On June 1st, a violent storm hit Thuringia and left massive damage in the Weimar region. The streets turned into raging streams while avalanches of mud and rubble rolled through the affected districts. The rural community of Am Ettersberg was particularly hard hit. The fire brigades were in constant use to repair the damage and provide support. It took courage to fight through the devastation, and many residents needed help.

In an emotional story, a family that lost everything in the floods stands out. Luise, a close friend of the family, has started a call for donations on the GoFundMe platform. The pictures on the page show the destruction: water and mud have broken through the farm gate and damaged the farm, barn and garden. “We were always there for others,” explains Luise and is now asking for support for the family, which urgently needs help with reconstruction. The cost of repairs, replacements and preventative measures against future storms is significant.

Watery night

The storm didn't just hit Am Ettersberg. In the Bad Berka district of Tannroda, gravel piled up to half a meter high and destroyed parts of the infrastructure. Roads had to be closed temporarily and in many places the sewage system could not cope with the massive rain. Within a few minutes, large amounts of rain fell, causing flooded streets and putting fire departments from several cities on alert.

The thunderstorms also left their mark in Kranichfeld. The dangerous weather conditions even led to an accident on the A4 near Weimar, in which several vehicles collided on the rain-soaked road. Fortunately, there was only one slightly injured person and total damage of around 50,000 euros. The highway had to be temporarily closed to clear the scene of the accident.

Weather warnings for Thuringia

The German Weather Service (DWD) had already warned of the severe thunderstorms. Severe weather warnings were declared for Thuringia, which included both advance warnings and acute warnings. The warning levels range from moderate (orange) to extreme severe weather (purple). Information on this will be available in good time in the Severe Weather Center, which also offers an overview map for various types of severe weather. The forecasts are continually adjusted by experienced meteorologists in order to provide citizens with the best possible information.

The new week in Thuringia begins with cooler temperatures. The forecasts show that after the weekend of thunderstorms, the temperature scale will rise again into the summer range, with highs between 20 and 24 degrees expected.

The people in the affected regions show great solidarity and support each other. Luise is also taking a step in this direction with her appeal on GoFundMe. Every contribution counts and can help to heal the wounds of this force of nature to some extent.
