Magic Flute as a wrestling show: DNT Weimar inspires young and old!

The 2025 summer theater has started in Weimar! The director Anna Weber stages Mozart's popular opera “The Magic Flute”, which premiered on Saturday at the E-Werk. This reinterpretation combines the aesthetics of television shows with the dynamics of computer games and presents the opera as a turbulent spectacle. The whole thing is a mixture of a game show and a wrestling match that captivates the audience in a special way. As MDR reports, the German National Theater (DNT) can earn up to 360,000 euros for a total of 12 performances, provided all seats are sold out.

The production offers much more than just classical opera. The stage design, a pink construction resembling a climbing rock, and the clash of teams – “Team Queen” led by the Queen of the Night and “Team Sarastro” – bring the concept to life. Viewers can look forward to a unique experience and can even intervene in the action themselves, with Prince Tamino appearing as the Joker. There are also humorous extras who lighten up the performance. The showmaster, who leads through the action and comments on the music, brings additional charm to the proceedings.

Criticism and artists

Particularly noteworthy is the performance of Ylva Stenberg in the role of the Queen of the Night, who delights the audience with her voice. This production focuses not only on the musical effect, but also on the visual effect. The use of elements of Commedia dell’arte and the mix of different genres make this production a unique experience. Costumes by Stella Lennert and the set design by Judith Philipp contribute greatly to the atmosphere.

The plot is not left out. Originally created in 1791 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Emanuel Schikaneder, “The Magic Flute” focuses on the struggle for power between the Queen of the Night and Sarastro. The different levels of the production are cleverly integrated into the structure of the opera, making the experience even more exciting for the audience. Spectators are asked to bring warm and weatherproof clothing as it will be played outdoors. Seat cushions and blankets are allowed, but umbrellas are unfortunately taboo, as stated in the event information Nationaltheater Weimar.

Dates and further information

The next performances are scheduled for June 17th, 18th and then on June 20th, 21st, 26th, 27th and July 2nd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th. If you are a fan of innovative productions and want to experience the interplay between opera and popular culture, “The Magic Flute” at E-Werk is the place to be!

The opera itself, set in a fairytale Egypt, consists of two acts and over 21 musical numbers linked by spoken dialogue. This mixture of musical theater, serious opera and folk theater is timeless and has thrilled numerous generations. Despite the modern production, the heart of the opera, the search for humanity and ideal coexistence, remains ever more relevant, as is described in detail on Opernfan.
