Storm chaos in Germany: heavy rain and hail devastate regions!
In the last few days, Germany has been struggling with severe storms that have already devastated numerous areas. Including Saxony, Thuringia, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg were particularly badly affected. In Kranichfeld in Weimarer Land, for example, thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon caused rainfall of up to 30 cm in streets and gardens, which prompted the fire department to pump out cellars, reports Mercury.
On the A7 near Memmingen, heavy rain led to an accident involving a vehicle crew who certainly had not expected such drastic weather conditions. The dense storm clouds could not be overlooked in the Neu-Ulm district either. But not only this; The Erzgebirgskreis suffered from severe thunderstorms during the night and there was heavy rain again. Emergency services were constantly required to keep the situation under control.
Weather conditions and dangers
The weather service reported that a low called “Ole” has been moving over Germany since May 28th and has issued weather warnings particularly for the north and center of the country. Meteorologist Dominik Jung points out that “one shower follows the next” and lightning-fast weather changes are currently the order of the day. From Lower Saxony to North Rhine-Westphalia to Hesse, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, everyone is affected. Let's hope that the situation calms down soon, although there is currently no sign of the weather calming down HNA.
There is still a risk of heavy rain and partial flooding in the Alps and the Black Forest. The dangers of supercells, the particularly dangerous thunderstorm formations, can bring hail, strong squalls and tornadoes, which makes the situation even worse. The explosive development of this weather front gives rise to worrying thoughts.
Climate change and extreme weather
These extreme weather events don't just have local impacts. A recent fact paper from the German Weather Service finds that global warming is causing significant changes. More and more extreme weather events are being recorded in new areas. In Germany there is an increase in heat waves, while severe frosts are decreasing. This phenomenon could influence the probability of heavy rain events, which poses ever greater challenges, as the report by DWD emerges.
The developments clearly show that these weather extremes are not just a one-off phenomenon, but will increase in the coming decades. Every place in Germany, including our beautiful cathedral city of Cologne, has to reckon with these changed weather conditions. Careful observation and preventative measures are required so that such catastrophic situations can perhaps be better managed in the future.
