Weimar in the water emergency: Strict ban protects water!

Weimar, Deutschland - The persistent drought in Thuringia, especially in Weimar, is increasingly causing excitement and concern. Like thueningen24.de reported, the water levels of the ILM and other waters are on an alarming historical low. The rainfall in the past few months has remained well below the long -term average without significant rains in the next few weeks. The city of Weimar has therefore reacted and enacted a temporary ban on withdrawing water from urban waters.

From July 4, 2025, this ban will apply until October 31, 2025. This is intended to secure the ecological state of the waters. The only except for scooping with hand vessels, such as watering can or bucket, which remains allowed for cattle potions. These measures were decided in close coordination with the lower water authority of the Weimar Land district to ensure the minimum water outflow in the waters and to protect the habitat of aquatic animals and plants.

concerned citizens in Thuringia

The concern for water consumption also grows among the citizens. According to a survey by BUND Thuringia show over 52 percent of Thuringian concern because of the continuing dryness. Older people in particular, such as 64 percent of those over 65, feel affected. Frequent measures for water savings will find positive response. So many are willing to do without things like car washes or the use of pools to save water.

Another aspect that arises is the discussion about higher water withdrawal for companies with high water consumption. BUND Managing Director Sebastian König sees a need to protect the water balance and develop sustainable strategies. Currently, large water consumers in Thuringia are energy suppliers, mining, the manufacturing trade and agriculture.

further measures in Thuringia

In several districts of Thuringia, as well as in Weimarer Land, there are already water withdrawal bans to protect the waters. The national water strategy is also planning to advance water withdrawal fees in order to create the financial basis for sustainable water management measures. These strategies aim to secure the natural water requirements of the ecosystems in the long term and to promote responsible use of water in society.

The city administration of Weimar appeals to the citizens: inside, supporting these measures and showing understanding for the need for the regulations. Only together can it be possible to cope with the challenges of the drought and to maintain the livelihoods in our region.
