US Defense Minister Hegseth: Plans for Greenland march exposed!
In a congress survey,US defense minister Pete Hegseth indicated vague plans for possible military takeovers by Greenland or the Panama Canal. When asked by a Republican deputy as to whether the Pentagon was prepared for such operations, Hegseth said that the Ministry of Defense had emergency plans for all eventualities. This is a usual practice of the Pentagon, which advises for various conflict scenarios, even if there is no current occasion. Nevertheless, deputy Mike Turner evaluates the answer as inadequate and places in the room whether there are actually plans for Greenland's violent use. Hegseth countered these doubts with the indication that cooperation with Greenland was a priority to protect against threats.
In the survey, Hegseth also organized military agreements through the Messaging app Signal. This approach caused frustration among the Democrats. MP Salud Carbajal criticized Hegseth Scharf and called for his resignation, while the discussion about the use of communication means in sensitive military contexts was getting louder.
Europe's security situation in focus
The latest US announcements not only put the strategic planning of the pentagon to the test, but also affect the security policy landscape of Europe. Experts warn of the potential consequences of an armistice between Ukraine and Russia. Such peace could endanger the credibility of western deterrence and thus question long -term stability in Europe. The influence of the United States on the Ukraine War could also decrease if you try to end it without your European partners, as analysts in the media emphasize.
Gustav Gressel warns that European security may no longer have a top priority for the United States. This enables Germany to overcome structural inertia in order to react quickly and effectively. The Bundeswehr is currently understaffed with 180,000 soldiers and could need more military resources to meet the challenges of time.
need to invest
A Russian victory in Ukraine could fundamentally change the security architecture of Europe and have significant economic consequences for Germany. Experts demand that Germany and the EU should significantly increase their military expenses. A stronger military cooperation between Germany, France, Spain and Italy could send a strong signal to Russia and strengthen the European position in global security architecture.
An analysis of the Kiel Institute for the global economy shows that the costs of successful deterrence could be many times higher than the current military support. Higher defense spending could even grow the European gross domestic product by 0.9 to 1.5 percent. In view of the escalating conflict between China and Taiwan, there is also a risk that Germany will also feel serious economic consequences. Therefore, the need for specific measures to secure European security is more urgent than ever.
