USA show understanding of Russia's demand - peace talks in Istanbul!

In an interview with ABC News,

US UKRAINE sent Keith Kellogg has expressed understanding for the Russian demand for an end to NATO east extension. Kellogg described this claim as a "legitimate concern" and emphasized that Ukraine's NATO accession for the United States was not on debate. These statements made before a planned meeting between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul on June 2 could be a turn in the diplomatic efforts to make peace in the Ukraine conflict.

Washington is therefore open to the considerations of Moscow, which require a written promise that NATO does not extend to the east. A final stop of the NATO east extension could also prevent Ukraine, Georgia and the Republic of Moldova, while Finland and Sweden have joined the alliance due to the current security situation. The demands of Russia in the overall package of the peace talks are far -reaching and include the abolition of sanctions and the protection of the Russian -speaking population in Ukraine.

peace talks in Istanbul

The talks on June 2 in Istanbul serve the purpose of bringing together the memorands designed on both sides. Representatives of Germany, France and Great Britain should also take part in the negotiations in order to find a common basis and to obtain a ceasefire. In this context, Kellogg also presented a plan that provides for an armistice along the current front lines, followed by negotiations and a peace treaty. Membership of Ukraine in NATO is explicitly excluded.

Russia's spokeswoman Maria Sacharova accused the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj of being interested in the war for fear of loss of power. At the same time, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is pushing for an urgent peace solution between Moscow and Kiev, which underlines the willingness to diplomacy. Kellogg notes that not only the United States sees the position of NATO east extension as critical.

background to NATO

The North Atlantic Pact Organization (NATO) was founded in 1949 and serves as a military counterweight to the Soviet expansion of power during the Cold War. 30 countries are represented within the alliance that have committed political and military cooperation. Article 5 of the contract stipulates that all members have to support each other if one of them is attacked. In the past, NATO has started significant missions in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Relations between NATO and Russia have deteriorated considerably since 2014, after the annexation of the Crimea. The current situation in the Ukraine conflict has further exacerbated these tensions and affects not only the geopolitical situation in Europe, but also the security architecture worldwide.
