WadePhul ensures Israel new weapons aid - remain humanitarian concerns!

Berlin, Deutschland - Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul (CDU) has announced that Germany will continue to be promised Israel. This happened in the run -up to the visit of Israel Foreign Minister Gideon Saar in Berlin. WadePhul emphasized the need for this support, which is considered crucial in view of the persistent attacks by Hamas as well as the Huthi militias and the Hisbollah. Germany has thus entered a position that is supposed to ensure both security as well as adherence to humanitarian standards.

In a calf phle sensitive to the CDU, the weapon deliveries should be made dependent on an international law review of the military action of Israel in the Gaza Strip. This statement caused irritation internally, since the board of the Union faction agreed that criticism of Israel may be expressed, but should not follow any consequences in the form of weapon delivery stop or sanctions. German politics must be based on humanitarian international law, said WadePhul.

arms exports in focus

In his explanations,

WADEPHUL also referred to the role of the Federal Security Council, which is responsible for the decision on arms exports. Israel's security is part of the German State Räson. "Points of criticism can be expressed among friends," emphasized the Foreign Minister, while at the same time reinforcing support for Israel.

In this context, the development of arms exports to Israel can also be considered. Germany is one of the most important arms suppliers for Israel after the United States. In 2023, the Federal Government approved arms exports worth 326.5 million euros, which represents a drastic increase compared to the previous year. This increase could be partly a reaction to the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2022.

Current trends and numbers

Until mid -August 2024 arms exports worth 14.5 million euros were approved, which represents a significant decline compared to the previous year. The majority of these exports consisted of protective materials such as helmets and protective vests, while only two percent of the approved exports included war weapons after October 7, 2022. Since March 2024, no war weapons exports have been approved to Israel, which underlines the strict review of German arms export policy.

The Federal Government emphasized that there is no general export stop and that every decision is made in individual cases. Minister Robert Habeck pointed out that the type of weapon systems that may be used in the Gaza Strip are particularly important.

WADEPHUL is determined to continue the talks with the Israeli Foreign Minister. The visit to the Holocaust memorial, in which a wreath is laid down, underlines the historical responsibility of Germany. Political discussions and a press conference are planned for these events.

The continued discussion about weapon exports and the associated moral and political implications remains a central topic in German foreign policy.
