Hamburg in cruise fever: 11 ships this week in the harbor!
in the week from July 9th to 15th, 2025, the port of Hamburg will be all about the cruise. A total of eleven cruise ships will start the terminals Steinwerder, Altona and Hafencity, which brings several thousand passengers to the city. The premiere of the “Pacific World”, a cruise ship of the Japanese organization Peace Boat, is particularly gratifying this weekend in Hamburg. This week will prove to be an important moment for the Hanseatic city, which has established itself as a leading cruise destination.
On Monday, the renowned cruise ship "MS Europa" will moor with a capacity of 408 passengers in the Cruise Center Hafencity, while the "MSC Preziosa", which offers space for over 3,500 passengers, creates in Steinwerder. A total of six attempts by the "MS Europa" and eleven attempts by the "MSC Preziosa" in Hamburg are already planned this year. On Tuesday, the "MS Hamburg" will make 410 passengers in Hafencity Dock, while the "Costa Favolosa" creates in Steinwerder and offers space for approx. 3,600 passengers.
diverse program and high passenger numbers
The variety of cruise ships continues over the course of the week. On Wednesday, the "MS Europa 2" will arrive in Altona with 515 passengers, followed by the "MS Frederic Chopin", which offers space for 80 passengers. On Thursday, too, the "AIDA Prima", which creates in Steinwerder in the morning and offers space for over 3,300 passengers, is set another highlight. The "AIDA Prima" will visit the port of Hamburg 15 times this year.
The numbers prove Hamburg's success as a cruise destination. In 2023, the city recorded a record number of 1,204,089 cruise passengers, which is a significant increase compared to 2022, in which only 785,000 passengers were counted. A total of 51 different ships started the port of Hamburg 278 times, including eight first runs and 62 trials of river cruise ships. Dr. Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economic Affairs and Innovation, emphasizes the importance of the cruise industry for added value and employment in Hamburg.
sustainable developments and future plans
A crucial aspect for the future of the Hamburg port is the opening of a modern cruise terminal in HafenCity in 2025. This is equipped with two berths and a country power supply, which is intended to serve both ecological and economic advantages. The expansion of the land power supply at all cruise terminals is further advanced to consolidate Hamburg's position as a sustainable cruise destination.
For 2024, the port management plans 270 attempts from underground ships and 60 attempts by river cruise ships. In addition, ten first runs have been announced for this year, including well -known ships such as Cunards "Queen Anne" and Disney Cruise Lines "Disney Dream". This shows the growing interest in cruises in particular German vacationers and underlines the role of Hamburg as one of the leading cruise ports in Europe.
The industry annually contributes to the economy of Hamburg with gross added value of 420 million euros and secures 4,490 full-time positions. The Hamburg port birthday, which is celebrated from May 9th to 12th, 2024, will also offer an opportunity to present the attractiveness and importance of the cruise in the Hanseatic city of the general public.
