Oderbrücke: A film about the connecting power of Frankfurt and Slubice
Today the Oder is perceived as more than just a border - it acts as a connecting element between Frankfurt (Oder) and Slubice in Poland. This thriving border region is closely interwoven not only geographically, but also culturally and socially. The Oder Bridge is a vital artery that enables residents of both cities to commute regularly and exchange ideas with one another. A new film highlights the positive aspects of this cross-border life, introducing personalities who shape the region, such as an Oder captain and a tram rescuer, as well as a returnee from India and a visionary who wants to build a bridge between cultures with his idea “Slubfurt”. The RBB reports, that Frankfurt (Oder) is also known for its successful frozen yeast dumplings and is home to the only Kleist museum in the world.
In the Kleist Museum, which is an important cultural attraction in the city, students from the European University Viadrina engage intensively with the famous writer Heinrich von Kleist. In a special seminar, 15 students researched Kleist's life and work for a semester. Through further training at the Kleist Museum to train storyteller guides, they went from Kleist newcomers to real connoisseurs who can now offer tours through the permanent exhibition “Puzzles, Fights, Fractures”. The Viadrina logbook reports about the exciting developments and successes of the two students, Weronika Ciepielewska and Agnieszka Kryszczuk, who took their exams in a public tour on February 11, 2022.
Culture and education in the foreground
The international symposium, which deals with the university policy transformations since the 1970s, shows what is not only culturally but also academically important in the region. Here we discuss how everyday academic spaces and teaching, research and funding policies were influenced. The University of Graz provides information about the various topics addressed in this symposium, especially the transformation of European universities into competitive companies in the global knowledge society.
With their knowledge and enthusiasm, the students at the Kleist Museum contribute to the dissemination of Kleist's work and its significance in the region. It is noteworthy that ten of the 15 trained guides can already offer guided tours and that future program items will also be made available to a wider public. The Kleist Museum is not only a place for learning about literature, but also a place for encounters and intercultural exchange.
These developments make it clear that the Oder region, with its cultural offerings and educational institutions, functions more than ever as a Europe-wide interface. Quality of life and intercultural understanding are the focus here and that is exactly what brings the people in Frankfurt (Oder) and Slubice together.
