This is evident not least in the various military campaigns that have taken place there over the centuries, from the Anglo-Afghan Wars to the recent events surrounding the Taliban's transition to power in 2021.
Since then, there have been heated discussions around the world about the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. Both the human rights situation - particularly the situation of women and religious minorities - and the economic challenges characterized by terrorism, poverty and high child mortality cast a bleak light on the country. Despite the great challenges, Afghanistan has a rich cultural tradition reflected in music, art and historical heritage. Where there were once heydays, today you can see above all the disruption.
What does this mean for the future?
The arrival of Afghan refugees in Germany could represent a small glimmer of hope. Although the federal government has changed the admission policy, the possibility of obtaining visas through legal action shows that offers of help and legal options still exist.
