Berlin on the way to becoming an economic metropolis: Is the city overtaking Munich?

In the current analysis of the “Global Cities Index”, five German cities are in the top 100 of the economically strongest regions in the world. Munich's ranking at 22nd and Berlin's at 29th is significant as Oxford Economics forecasts suggest that Berlin could soon overtake Munich. This results in exciting developments for German cities and their economic strengths.

According to Welt, Munich's gross domestic product (GDP) is $283 billion, while Berlin is just behind at $280 billion. Berlin's opportunities for advancement are based on a robust economic outlook, attractiveness for young talent and a flourishing creative and technology sector. These factors bring a breath of fresh air and many new ideas to the city.

The ranking list at a glance

Here is an overview of the German cities in the “Global Cities Index”:

  • München: Platz 22
  • Berlin: Platz 29
  • Hamburg: Platz 39
  • Frankfurt: Platz 62
  • Düsseldorf: Platz 99

Overall, it shows that Berlin is not only catching up economically, but is also scoring points in terms of human capital. “Human capital” is understood to mean the age structure of the population and the quality of educational and scientific institutions. The comparison with cities such as Zurich, Geneva and Vienna, which also rank among the best in the world, is illuminated by the analysis by Oxford Economics. Switzerland has five cities in the top 100, Austria only has one city, Vienna, in 36th place.

Economic strengths in focus

But size alone doesn't make you strong. As the IWD explains, economic strength is often measured by gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. In this ranking, Wolfsburg is at the top with an impressive GDP of almost 146,000 euros per capita. Berlin, on the other hand, is positioned in the midfield with around 49,200 euros per capita and still achieved significant GDP growth of 14 percent between 2019 and 2022. This shows that, despite challenges, there is a positive trend in the start-up sector.

What lies ahead for cities now? The analysis of the urban dynamics on which the Global Cities Index is based could provide important information for investors, corporate strategies and urban development plans. The index, created by a team of over 40 economists, represents a valuable resource for governments and companies. The challenges and opportunities of different cities could be better managed.

The dominance of English-speaking cities in the index is striking. New York, London and Paris are the global pioneers, while only Hong Kong is a Chinese metropolis in the top 100. These disparities can present both opportunities and challenges for European cities eager to achieve economic stability and growth.

Overall, it remains to be seen whether Berlin can actually overtake Munich. The current developments definitely promise exciting times for the German economy and its metropolises.
