A worrying sight occurred recently in Berlin: a tree on a median strip was defaced with around 50 used heroin syringes. A photo taken by a BILD photographer showed a frightening picture of a social problem plaguing the city. The syringes apparently come from drug addicts who are active nearby. The syringes have now been removed and in their place there is a bucket with the inscription “My consumption - my rubbish”, which provides information for drug addicts in twelve languages. This initiative comes from the drug advice center “Fixpunkt”, which set up this bucket to encourage users to dispose of their syringes responsibly. Fernando, a 78-year-old homeless man, commented on the problems and warned that children could wander into the area and step on the syringes.
Active drug problems remain
Despite the removal of the syringes, drug trafficking remains active in the area, particularly on the U7 platform. The district office suspects that the Berlin city cleaning department not only disposed of the syringes, but also the surrounding garbage. These measures are urgently needed to ensure public safety.
