Drug deaths in Berlin reach peak: alarming figures in 2024
The drug problem in Germany has reached a new tragic peak, especially in Berlin. According to current figures published by Hendrik Streeck, the federal government's drug commissioner, there were a total of 2,137 drug-related deaths across the country in 2024. That's 90 fewer cases than last year, but the capital stands out with an alarming 294 drug-related deaths, which is the highest level since the early 2000s. Only in 2023, 271 drug-related deaths were registered in Berlin. This is a trend that worries many because while the overall number of drug deaths in Germany has fallen, things look bleak in the capital and particularly among younger people.
A look at the details reveals a worrying dynamic. The proportion of deaths among young adults under the age of 30 increased by 14 percent compared to the previous year. Deaths related to synthetic opioids, such as the dangerous fentanyl, have increased to 342, also a record high. Meanwhile, the number of drug deaths due to new psychoactive substances has increased by more than 70 percent and now stands at 154. rbb24 reports that no toxicological reports or autopsies were carried out in around half of the drug deaths. This suggests a high number of unreported cases and raises questions about the quality of the data, which is essential for future preventive measures.
An alarming warning signal
Streeck speaks of a “quasi-pandemic dynamic” that cannot be ignored. The situation is described as critical, not least due to the increased availability of dangerous drugs, which is facilitated by new online and smuggling channels. The situation is also made worse by the Taliban's opium ban in Afghanistan, which has led to an increase in laboratory opiates. Streeck warns that these developments could have massive health and social consequences in the coming years. He urgently calls for a systematic monitoring and warning system that enables a timely response to new drugs. Berliner Zeitung highlights that this is crucial to improve the strategy against drug use and associated mortality.
In recent years the number of drug-related deaths has risen enormously. Ten years ago the numbers were half as high. In the current situation, the need for political measures and social discourse is clearer than ever. According to Apotheke Adhoc, quick, systematic and consistent action is required to counteract this development. Positive feedback on drug consumption rooms shows that such facilities could potentially save lives and must be considered a strategic element in combating the drug crisis.
The challenge is great, but time to act is urgent: without valid data and a clear strategy, the drug crisis could escalate further. Urgent work needs to be done to both protect human lives and regain society's trust.
