Drone nightmare at BER: Airport crashes for two hours!

On Friday evening, Berlin's BER airport was shut down for almost two hours - not due to technical problems, but because of a drone sighting. An attentive witness reported the uninvited flying object, which immediately called the police to the scene. They even used a helicopter to locate the drone, which was traveling within a 1.5 kilometer radius of the airport, where it is banned from flying. Despite an intensive search, no further evidence of the drone could be found and flight operations were suspended for a few minutes. World reports.

Due to the involuntary disruption, numerous flights had to be rerouted. These included connections from Stockholm, Antalya, Helsinki and London. In order to compensate for the delays that occurred, planes were allowed to take off until 2:00 a.m. and land at night, which fortunately was used by five flights. Meanwhile, ground operations remained unaffected by the drone situation. However, the airport can resume regular operations on Saturday and there have been no further reports of drone sightings.

Drones as a growing problem

Incidents involving drones are not only increasing at BER. By the end of August 2023, 144 disruptions caused by drones had already been registered, compared to 113 the previous year. Ralph Beisel, general manager of the airport association ADV, clearly criticizes the current situation and calls for a higher level of security. In his appeal he makes it clear that the airports themselves do not have the necessary resources to actively fend off drones. He therefore calls for the formation of a special situation center. According to time online the state must act here.

Politically, the topic of drone defense is also very important. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) plans to strengthen drone defense at the federal level. In the future, a joint defense center in which various security authorities and the Bundeswehr work together will ensure that the dangers posed by drones are identified at an early stage. However, views on appropriate defense methods vary; Some suggestions range from taking control electronically to capturing them with a net and even, controversially, shooting down the drones.

The incident in Berlin shows once again that air traffic safety remains an extremely important issue with regard to drones. The continually growing challenges make it clear that a rethink and quick action are necessary to ensure the safety of aviation.
