Attempted break-in in Berlin jeweler: perpetrator escapes despite alarm!

On October 30, 2025, in the early hours of the morning, the police registered an attempted break-in at the renowned Turkish jewelry chain “LIZAY” in the Mall of Berlinat Leipziger Platz. Five masked men showed up in a car around half past five and tried to break open the security roller gate of the jewelry counter.

The perpetrators stacked chairs and tables on top of each other to make it easier to lift the gate. It remains uncertain whether they actually got into the store. Witnesses reported that the burglars gained access to the mall via the underground car park as the upper entrances were closed, while the gate for delivery vehicles had been open since four o'clock. After the failed attempt, the men fled in their car while the police initiated a pursuit but quickly lost track of the suspects.

Alarm system and smoke development

A special detail of the incident: The smoke system in the jewelry store was activated and caused thick smoke to develop. The fire department was called, but checked the situation without finding a fire. According to reports from the Berlin newspaperThe security system was only used after the perpetrators had already fled, which probably caught the intruders completely unprepared.

The criminal police have now taken over the investigation and are securing evidence at the crime scene. There is currently no information about the identity of the perpetrators. This type of break-in is by no means new in Berlin. There was a similar incident at the same location in May: four masked men threw a manhole cover through the glass and destroyed the display cases with sledgehammers. In April, thieves also used a car ramp in another Berlin shopping center to gain access to another jewelry store.

Assessment of the burglary dynamics in Germany

These incidents reflect a worrying trend. In 2024, the number of residential burglaries in Germany rose slightly, with a total of 78,436 cases - this represents an increase of 0.8 percent compared to 77,819 burglaries in 2023, according to Police your partner. The clearance rate of only 15.3 percent shows how difficult it often is to punish and prevent this type of crime.

Cases of burglars trying to break into stores are increasing. Consumers and business owners therefore need to be more aware of safety precautions. Using mechanical and electronic security measures can be instrumental in preventing break-ins.

In the context of these crimes, simple behavior to prevent burglary is just as important. Windows should be closed, doors should always be fully locked and presence should be simulated to deter potential perpetrators. The recent incidents in Berlin are a clear signal that the danger of break-ins is omnipresent.
