Novice driver runs over senior couple: lives in danger!

Late on Friday afternoon, June 27, 2025, two seniors in Berlin-Tempelhof suffered life-threatening injuries in a tragic traffic accident. A 20-year-old novice driver turned from Sandsteinweg into Mariendorfer Damm and hit the retired couple who were about to cross a pedestrian ford. The two older women, aged 88 and 85, were thrown into the air by the collision with an Opel Astra and sustained serious skull injuries. Both were immediately treated on site and then taken to a hospital. It is unclear what their health status is, while the identities of those injured have not yet been released.

Again Daily Mirror According to reports, the two seniors crossed Mariendorfer Damm around 5:30 p.m., where there are no traffic lights. They had already crossed the bus lane and were on their way to the pedestrian crossing when they were suddenly hit by the car. The driver, whose vehicle was seized for evidence, is currently being questioned by the police. Investigations into the exact cause of the accident and the driver's behavior are ongoing. Mariendorfer Damm is closed for accident recording until further notice.

Vulnerability of older road users

This incident highlights the dangers that seniors face on the road. According to a recent study by the Federal Ministry of Transport In 2023, more than half of the pedestrians and cyclists who were fatally injured were at least 65 years old. Older people are among the most vulnerable road users, and this vulnerability is often compounded by age-related changes in motor and cognitive abilities.

Various programs and initiatives are in place to minimize these risks. The German Road Safety Days offer free information on turning accidents and training to strengthen the safety of seniors in road traffic. For example, the campaign “I feel young. I just need longer” aims to raise awareness among younger road users to be more considerate.

In addition, seminars are offered by the German Road Safety Council to help older people realistically assess their performance and promote individual safety. This shows how important it is to actively promote road safety so that seniors can remain mobile safely.

Overall, it is hoped that the affected seniors will recover soon and that lessons will be learned from this incident for the future in order to avoid similar tragedies. It is necessary for all road users, especially younger drivers, to act responsibly and drive more carefully on the streets.
