Art over water: New mural transforms Old Tegel into a highlight!

Since November 8, 2025, a new mural has been shining in the kiosk on the Alt-Tegel shopping street in Berlin. At the intersection of Berliner Straße and Alt-Tegel, where the pedestrian zone begins, an artistic design adorns the picture. The Tape Over agency has created a wave in a unique “tape art” style that focuses on the topic of water. According to berlin.de, this is one of several projects to beautify the gastronomy mile, which extends from Berliner Straße to the Greenwich Promenade.

The location of Alt-Tegel, not far from the water, not only attracts locals, but is also intended to attract tourists to the north of Berlin. A feasibility study, in which citizens were involved, developed measures to preserve and, if necessary, improve the charm of the shop-friendly street. The city councilor for urban development, Korinna Stephan, emphasizes that Alt-Tegel has the potential to become “the most beautiful street in Berlin” and thanks everyone who contributed to the feasibility study.

New measures for Alt-Tegel

The Tape Over project aims to take another step in the right direction. From summer 2024, a concept of measures to upgrade the shopping street will also be commissioned. The goal? Think about identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the surrounding area and developing a mission statement that sustainably increases the quality of stay in Alt-Tegel.

Particular attention is paid to space design and improving seating, planting and accessibility. New planters will also be installed and a lighting concept for the darker seasons will help to improve the quality of stay. Even old flower pots that no longer do justice to the image of the kiosk will soon be removed. The redesign of the wooden benches, which will be given a new blue coat of paint at the beginning of 2024, will also create a connection to the waterline to the Greenwich promenade.

Old Tegel in transition

These measures are part of a comprehensive program aimed at increasing the visibility and attractiveness of the area. And the Berlin office LOKATION:S particularly developed this concept; it has already been presented to the urban development committee and will soon be published.

The developments in Alt-Tegel clearly show that there is a good knack for upgrading the district. These encouragements can perhaps serve as a model for other districts facing similar challenges.
