Massive train cancellations: Arson causes chaos between Nuremberg and Bamberg!

Rail traffic between Munich and Berlin is currently severely affected. Massive delays and train cancellations are the result of a fire in a railway underpass that occurred in Markt Hirschaid, between Forchheim and Bamberg. According to that ADAC Part of the route will be closed until Monday, July 14th. Travelers must be prepared for significant inconveniences. The ICE trains between Nuremberg and Erfurt are particularly affected, as they have to be rerouted and suffer delays of around 100 minutes.

The Erlangen, Bamberg and Coburg stops are not served by these trains. Instead, a stop will be set up at Würzburg main station. Some ICE trains are even canceled completely, which significantly worsens the situation for commuters and travelers.
There are also difficulties in intercity traffic: individual IC trains between Nuremberg and Leipzig (via Jena) and between Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe and Gera are canceled. A replacement bus service was set up for the route between Forchheim and Bamberg.

Fire damage and investigations

The situation is not only annoying for travelers, but also a challenge for Deutsche Bahn. According to the Augsburg General The fire damage has already caused material damage of around 25,000 euros. The criminal police have now launched an investigation as arson is suspected. The railway speaks of “fire damage following vandalism”, which only increases the dimension of the problems.

Authorities have said repairs are expected to be completed by Sunday, but scheduled traffic will not be expected until Monday morning. This closure also affects numerous regional connections and two S-Bahn lines, and high utilization can be expected despite the replacement bus service. Express buses commute without stopping, which for many of those affected means that stops in Strullendorf, Hirschaid, Buttenheim and Eggolsheim are not served.

Conclusion and outlook

Rail customers are therefore faced with an uncertain situation. Travelers have the option of using alternative connections via Würzburg, although it remains to be seen how the diversions and waiting times will develop in the coming days. RBB24 has also previously reported similar cases of vandalism that disrupted rail traffic in various regions.

We will keep our readers up to date on developments and wish everyone affected a lot of patience on their journey!
