Huge cloud of smoke over Schöneberg: fire in the roof of an apartment building!
On Wednesday afternoon, July 2, 2025, there was a violent fire in an apartment building in the Schöneberg district of Berlin. A large column of smoke was visible from large parts of the city, frightening residents. Around 90 firefighters were on site to fight the fire that broke out in the roof of the house. Firefighters worked with an aerial ladder to extinguish the flames from above and bring the situation under control. Picture reported that more than 20 people made it to safety through scaffolding.
The fire was finally extinguished early in the evening and emergency services managed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings. One resident had to be taken to hospital due to suspected smoke inhalation, while all other residents were either able to escape independently or were rescued. It remains unclear how the fire started, but residents report ongoing construction work on the building. A Berlin police fire commissioner has taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire.
Construction work as a possible reason
The previous Monday, another fire occurred in a new high-rise building project in Berlin-Mitte. In the early hours of the morning there was a collapse on the roof John year house, a 115 million euro office and commercial building, a fire broke out, probably also due to construction work and possibly exploding gas bottles. This incident resulted in several violent explosions that created pressure waves that were felt in surrounding houses. Luckily no one was injured.
The fire department had to contend with additional challenges here. Height was a key factor on the 17-story building, as the longest turntable ladder measures 50 meters. In order to fight the fire efficiently, hoses had to be laid through the stairwell up to the 17th floor. This delayed the extinguishing work, but in this case too, the flames were quickly prevented from spreading to neighboring buildings. The area around Kurfürstenstrasse was closed in both directions between Keithstrasse and An der Urania during the operations.
It is clear that our colleagues from the fire department have to have a real knack for dealing with emergencies. Such incidents show how important a quick response and precise operations by rescue services are. The investigation into the exact cause of the fire continues. It will be interesting to see what comes of it.
