Berlin Technology Museum in Danger: Exhibits are in danger of falling into disrepair!
In the heart of Berlin, more precisely at Trebbiner Straße 9, the German Technology Museum is a popular destination for over 720,000 visitors every year. But it's not just the fascination of old technology that attracts people; the Berlin cuisine in the associated “Café Anhalt” is also appreciated. Here, guests enjoy dishes like currywurst, Swabian cheese spaetzle, and vegan curries while lingering among exhibits on aviation, shipping, and more. All information about opening times and contact for events can be found on the museum's website.
But while the number of visitors is increasing, the technology museum is facing a challenge: there is a lack of space for the impressive collections. More than 200,000 exhibits urgently need a new home. An appeal has already been made to the Senate because the current storage in the dilapidated halls in Reinickendorf is anything but ideal. According to Tagesschau, the old halls are not only in a precarious condition, but also dangerous: rain penetrates, and uninvited guests such as rats and martens have chosen the halls as their home.
An existing risk
In addition to the unstoppable deterioration of the halls, fire protection is a major issue. The fire department would not intervene in the event of a fire, which could mean a total loss of the collection. Over 80% of the unexhibited exhibits are housed in these old halls, underscoring the urgency of a move. Depot manager Ruppert makes it clear that the exhibits we all love are seriously suffering. The pressure on the Senate is growing, especially with the delay in the new “Berlin Modern” museum, which is scheduled to be completed by 2029.
The location on Goerzallee, a former Ford factory in Berlin-Steglitz, is seen as the favorite for a new depot because it is easily accessible. Alternatively, there is a possibility of a new building on an open space in Brandenburg. But both options remain undecided for the time being, as the Senate argues that companies locating on the site are of economic importance.
Support for the technology museum
This is where SPD MP Sven Heinemann comes into play. He emphasizes the appeal of the technology museum and calls for quick decisions during budget discussions. With over 700,000 visitors in 2024 and a clear focus on preserving Berlin's industrial history, the need for a new depot for the museum's future is more than a given. The entire Berlin audience should push for the city to act quickly.
For those who have not yet visited the Technology Museum: It offers exciting insights into the cultural history of technology and is a real treasure trove for those interested. And enjoy a cup of organic coffee or a piece of cake in Café Anhalt - because that's what a successful day looks like!
