Tragic swimming accident: man found dead in White Lake!

On Wednesday, August 14, 2025, a tragic swimming accident occurred in the White Lake in the Pankow district of Berlin. In the morning, passers-by discovered a lifeless person floating in the water and did not hesitate for a moment to help. They pulled the person from the water and attempted to revive him, but were unsuccessful. The police have now started investigating and are assuming an accident. The identity of the deceased is still unclear.

This incident falls into a worrying series of swimming accidents in Berlin. Since the beginning of the year, nine bathing deaths have been counted - one more fatal incident than in the same period last year, as the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) states. In another accident on the same day, there was a large-scale incident in Lake Tegel in which two people fell out of a boat. While one of the two was rescued, the search for the second was unsuccessful until the evening, with the fire department saying there was “no chance of survival” for this man.

A worrying development

The incidents are alarming and shed light on safety in Berlin's waters. Against the background of these tragic events, calls for caution when swimming are becoming increasingly louder. Especially in midsummer, when many Berliners and tourists flock to the refreshing waters, it is important to be aware of the dangers. The DLRG has therefore emphasized the importance of swimming knowledge and compliance with bathing rules in order to avoid such tragedies.

As mentioned above, such difficulties are not isolated phenomena. An increase in bathing deaths is observed across the country by the middle of the year. This is a sign that even popular leisure activities should always be viewed critically.

The role of lifesavers

The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) plays a central role in education and rescue on German waters. Whether in the Weißer See or in the Tegeler See - the emergency services are often on duty around the clock to protect bathers. But we can only hope that such tragic cases can be reduced through greater awareness and prevention.

These events remind us that leisure often carries higher risks that need to be taken into account. With a good knack for preventative measures, safety can be improved so that we can all enjoy the warm summer days in a safe environment.
