A fresh breeze is blowing at 1. FC Union Berlin: The club has hired a new assistant coach, Danilo Fernando Evangelista de Souza. The 41-year-old Brazilian comes directly from Leeds United, an English first division newcomer, and will strengthen the coaching team around head coach Steffen Baumgart, which already consists of Kevin McKenna, Sebastian Bönig and Adrian Wittmann. This news creates a sense of optimism at the Alte Försterei.
But who exactly is Danilo de Souza? After he ended his playing career, during which he was active for LR Ahlen and Wehen Wiesbaden, among others, in 2017, he took the step into a coaching career. At SC Paderborn he worked closely with Baumgart and oversaw over 159 competitive games. These experiences are worth their weight in gold for 1. FC Union, as Horst Heldt, Managing Director of Men's Professional Football, emphasized in an official statement. According to Heldt, de Souza not only brings specialist expertise, but also international experience and excellent social skills. De Souza himself is looking forward to the new task and emphasizes the trusting relationship with Baumgart.
A look at the tasks ahead
The newly appointed assistant coach will soon have to prove himself. The first test match against Brandenburger SC Süd 05 is scheduled for next Saturday. At the same time, the team is looking ahead to an upcoming training camp in Austria, where they will compete in friendly matches against LASK and Rapid Vienna. After these intensive preparations, we will go to the training camp in Herzogenaurach from July 23rd to August 1st. The first real endurance test awaits on August 15th in the DFB Cup, when FC Gütersloh travels to the Alte Försterei. The first Bundesliga game for the Union is on the 23rd/24th. August is on the program when we face cup winners VfB Stuttgart.
