25 years of wilderness protection: anniversary of the foundation in Lieberose celebrated

On June 15, 2025, a very special anniversary will be celebrated in Lieberose: The Naturlandschafts Brandenburg Foundation looks back on 25 years of successful commitment to the wilderness development of former military training areas. Among the guests will also be Brandenburg's State Secretary for Agriculture and Nutritional Economics, Gregor Beyer, who honors the achievements of the foundation. Minister Hanka Mittelstädt also sent her congratulations and emphasized the importance of the foundation.

The foundation, which was founded on May 16, 2000, has now secured over 15,150 hectares in Brandenburg, which corresponds to more than 40% of the protected wilderness areas in the region. These areas, spread over the former military training places Jüterbog, Heidehof, Lieberose and Tangersdorf, are larger than the urban area of Paris and offer habitat for rare species such as sea eagles, otters and wild cats. The military use of these areas ended in 1994 and created a unique retreat for flora and fauna, which remained undesirable and untouched by streets.

achievements and outlook

In the years of its existence, the foundation has emerged through various measures. Among other things, 73 kilometers of forest fire protection paths, 48 kilometers of fire protection strips as well as 17 fire fountains and 5 extinguishing water withdrawal points were created to improve protection against forest fires. Since 2019, more than 1.4 million euros in funding from the state, the federal government and the EU have been invested in nature. This shows that the foundation has a good knack for promoting important projects.

The board members Dr. Antje Wurz and Dr. Andreas Meißner are proud of the success of the foundation and have ambitious plans for the future. Among other things, a new visitor center is to be created that facilitates access to nature. In addition, new hiking trails are being planned and cooperation with schools are sought in order to further promote awareness of the value of nature.

interactive natural experiences

Special highlights will be numerous hands -on activities, tours and insights into nature in the anniversary year. The foundation offers over 50 public hikes and events every year, many of them free of charge to bring people closer to the beauty of wild nature. With interactive hiking trails and guided tours, the foundation would like to strengthen interest in the rich natural treasures of Brandenburg. The development of the Heideradweg, which runs on a former railway line, is also advanced to offer nature lovers an even better exploration option.

In summary, it can be said that the Naturlandschafts Brandenburg Foundation not only makes a valuable contribution to the protection of nature, but also actively works to strengthen acceptance and awareness of the wilderness on site. At a time when climate change is becoming more and more present, their commitment is more important than ever. A look into the future shows numerous promising projects that will help to preserve Brandenburg's unique landscapes for future generations.

A celebration of the success will be in Lieberose on June 15, where the foundation will celebrate its successes and a view of future challenges and opportunities will be given.
