Ahrensfelde is setting an example: Raising the flag for peace and disarmament!

On July 15, 2025, many cities around the world will say: “Hoist the flag for peace!” On this special day, Flag Day of the “Mayors for Peace” initiative, Ahrensfelde shows that the commitment to a peaceful world is very important. This global effort, which brings together more than 8,500 member cities, was founded in 1982 by the mayor of Hiroshima to fight for the abolition of nuclear weapons. The significance of the day is underpinned by a ruling by the International Court of Justice, which ruled in 1996 that the use of nuclear weapons violated international law. Barnim Current reports on Ahrensfeld's participation, where the flag flies in the town hall for a month and calls on citizens to take a stand against nuclear armament.

But what else is happening in other cities? In Germany, around 600 municipalities take part in this important day, including districts in Berlin and the city of Seelow in Märkisch-Oderland. Mayor Robert Nitz urgently reminded people that in 2025, even 80 years after the end of the Second World War, it is important to send a clear signal against nuclear weapons. In Potsdam, this memorial campaign is symbolically underlined by the planting of a ginkgo tree that survived the explosion in Hiroshima. Potsdam's mayor Burkhard Exner reiterates his commitment to a world without nuclear weapons and emphasizes the historical relevance of the topic. RBB24 has documented this impressively.

Global challenges

Despite these encouraging, decisive actions, the challenges in the world remain great. According to experts at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), there are currently more than 12,241 nuclear warheads on the planet, and all nine nuclear powers are modernizing their arsenals. Of particular concern is the rapid growth of China's nuclear arsenal. This strengthens the voices in Hanover and other cities that are calling against a new nuclear arms race. Hanover and numerous other cities are working together for nuclear disarmament and better understanding between peoples.

Reference is also made to the New START Treaty, which regulates strategic nuclear weapons between the USA and Russia and expires at the beginning of next year. However, there is currently no sign of efforts to extend or replace it. This could pave the way for a new international arms race and makes the calls for disarmament all the more urgent.

In Ahrensfelde, the importance of Flag Day is highlighted even more widely. Mayor Wilfried Gehrke emphasizes the cities' obligation to promote global values and set an example for security and human rights. In the midst of international tensions, every voice that speaks out against war and for peace is needed. Citizens are encouraged to share photos with the flag on social media to further raise awareness and engagement. The official hashtag is: #flaggentagahrensfelde.
