Innovative care in Barnim: New concept inspires experts!

The 7th specialist day of the Barnim Nursing Initiative took place on October 14, 2025, this time focusing on the innovative care models and regional strategies for nursing care in Barnim. District Administrator Daniel Kurth opened the event and highlighted the importance of these topics for the future of nursing. The practice-oriented format enabled the participants to immerse themselves directly in nursing practice and visit various facilities in the district, as Barnim.de reports.

The locations visited included the University of Health Professions in Eberswalde, where the “Practice Lab” was presented. Here the participants had the opportunity to explore the differences between training and studying in nursing. Another important stop was the hospice at Drachenkopf, which offered information about palliative care in Barnim. The Johanniter-Quartier presented an innovative model with offers such as day care and physiotherapy practice. The “Zum Damhirsch” senior citizens’ home was also visited, where the focus was on the participation of seniors in accordance with SGB IX.

Palliative care in focus

A central aspect of this specialist day was specialized outpatient palliative care (SAPV), which complements general outpatient palliative care. The SAPV aims to maintain and further promote the quality of life and self-determination of palliative patients. The acceptance and implementation of such models are crucial to enable a humane life until death in familiar surroundings. The Care with Heart Barnim portal describes the importance of a specialized palliative team that assists with complex problems and offers tailored support to patients and their relatives.

The SAPV requires close collaboration with primary care – including private practitioners, nursing services and hospitals – as well as the hospice movement. The quality of care is ensured through regular team meetings and case discussions in order to optimally address the respective needs of the patients.

A look into the future

After the visits, a specialist event on the structural reform of nursing took place in the district's plenary hall. Here, Michael Ranft, curator of the German Altenhilfe Board of Trustees, spoke about 14 theses on the structural reform of care and the current status of the nationwide debate on the Care Future Pact. These issues are not only important regionally, because increasing life expectancy and demographic development, as explained in detail on the BMFTR website, lead to an increased need for flexible care options.

The need for nursing innovations is exacerbated by the shortage of nursing staff and the challenges in everyday life. Projects such as the “Care Innovations 2030” initiative aim to ensure needs-based care and rely on technical assistance systems that both make everyday care easier and improve the quality of life of those affected.

The high number of participants and the lively discussions during the specialist day impressively demonstrate the great interest in the future of care and participation in the region. Such events are of crucial importance in order to gain new ideas and promote exchange between specialists - not least in order to find answers to today's challenges in nursing.
