Schorfheide hunting lodge shines with an impressive trophy display!

The splendor of the Schorfheide hunting lodge

Anyone interested in the history of hunting and the impressive wildlife of Brandenburg should pay a visit to the Schorfheide hunting lodge in Groß Schönebeck. This castle houses the largest coherent collection of hunting trophies in Brandenburg. The impressive new trophy show building, which opened on June 21, 2005, is a real eye-catcher and offers a comprehensive insight into the hunting tradition through the centuries. The collection includes trophies from different eras, including the Kingdom of Prussia, the Weimar Republic, the National Socialist era, the GDR and modern times. In total, visitors can admire around 160 trophies from red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar and mouflon.

Special features of the exhibition are trophies of prominent personalities, which are highlighted separately. This gives the exhibition a special touch and makes it a unique experience. Local culture is also not neglected on the ceremonial opening day: the Schorfheider Jagdhornbläser provided musical support for the ceremony. Hunting lodge manager Florian Mölle praised the exhibition and emphasized its importance as a valuable additional offering to the thematic exhibition “Hunting and Power”, which deals with the history of hunting and its political dimensions.

The history and the exhibition themes

The Schorfheide hunting lodge was built around 1680 by the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm. The permanent exhibition “Hunting and Power” focuses on the history of hunting and its close connection to the Prussian kings and German emperors. The exhibition also sheds light on the upheavals from the Weimar Republic to the Nazi dictatorship and the recent past up to the time of reunification. The interior design over two floors surprises visitors with fascinating lines of sight and modern elements such as video projections and an extensive audio installation that showcases the different eras in an exciting way.

A tour of the castle not only shows historical trophies, but also the diversity of the surrounding Schorfheide-Chorin biosphere reserve. At the opening, Mayor Wilhelm Westerkamp highlighted the biodiversity in the Schorfheide and thereby underlined the importance of nature conservation in the region. This is all the more remarkable when you consider that in 1989 the Schorfheide state hunting area was an impressive 20,538 hectares in size, where Erich Honecker shot over 500 red deer.

Practical information for a great experience

The exhibition is barrier-free and offers various amenities, including WiFi, a terrace, a garden and charging stations for e-bikes. Physical well-being is not neglected either: the Groß Schönebeck Fire Department Support Association ensures tasty food at events. Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from May 15 to September 30, with a short closing window at lunchtime. The admission prices are fair and allow families and groups easy access to this cultural treasure trove.

Here is a quick overview of the entry prices:

  • Erwachsene: 7,00 Euro
  • Kinder (6 bis 14 Jahre): 1,50 Euro
  • Kinder unter 6 Jahren: Eintritt frei
  • Ermäßigt: 4,00 Euro (Schüler ab 15 Jahre, Studenten, Inhaber Ehrenamtskarte Berlin Brandenburg)
  • Gruppen: 5,00 Euro pro Person ab 20 Personen

Another highlight of the opening was an open-air concert in the castle park, musically directed by Urs-Michael Theus, with soprano Carola Reichenbach as a star guest. The event was a complete success and impressively demonstrated the connection between culture and nature.

For those interested in learning more about the meaning of hunting trophies, the collections in Saxony are also worth a visit, where, among other things, the important red deer trophies are exhibited in the Moritzburg collections, which have a long and fascinating history. Barnim Current reports on the highlights of the exhibition and the opening event, during Nature Brandenburg provides practical information for planning your visit.
